The scriptwriter of 'I Saw the Devil' & 'The Unjust' will be taking his second stab at directing in 2013 with the upcoming gangster movie 'The New World'.

Bringing together three of the best actors working in Korean cinema today - Choi Min-sik ('I Saw the Devil', 'Nameless Gangster', 'OldBoy'), Hwang Jeong-min ('The Unjust', 'Blades of Blood', 'Black House'), & Lee Jeong-jae ('The Thieves', 'Typhoon', 'Il Mare') - the movie revolves around the fight to be the heir of one of Korea's biggest gangs once the boss dies, and the detective whose risking his life to stay undercover in the process.

Everything about this movie suggests it should be quality, so I'll definitely be looking out for it once it gets a release!

Possible spoilers

Not a bad movie, a mix of Cop On a Mission, Infernal Affairs and Kitano's Outrage movies. Made me appreciate Cop On a Mission even more. I always thought that it inspired the first Infernal Affairs movie (guy changing sides) and now I see it in The New World...Liked the OST too...

That's crazy....the US release is tomorrow, while the actual Korean release isn't until 30th July! -

The US is not lagging behind everyone else with an Asian DVD release? Wow, that IS a shocker. ... a happy shocker! :nerd:

Somebody gave me a DVD Screener of this today, has anybody seen it yet and know if it is any good? Although judging by the cast, I doubt it will disappoint.

So it's a good movie with top-notch performances. The gangsters/police plot is very familiar, but they have adorned this tried-and true story framework with enough interesting characters, natural sounding dialogue, and sparkling cinematography to make it all seem fresh.

I don't want to say much about the plot, as it's nice to see films without everything being ruined first. Safe to say- there's a re-organization underway in a big gangster outfit, and the cops are looking for cracks in their infrastructure to bring them down. Choi Min-Sik is the cop leading the battalion.

There's a bit of brief action, but it's mainly a thriller/drama/suspense flick.

Recommended. 8.0 out of 10

Just got through watching this one, and can happily say it more than met my expectations, great movie! I felt a little intrepidation going into it, as I seem to be in the minority who didn't enjoy the last Choi Min-sik starring gangster movie, 'Nameless Gangster'. For me it felt like I was watching the Korean version of Scorsese's movies 'Goodfellas' and 'Casino', as opposed to the latest punch you in the gut Korean gangpei flick.

Thanfully 'New World' put all those fears to rest very quickly. Although on paper it actually reads a little like a riff on the Hong Kong movie 'Infernal Affairs', the movie itself plays out more like Takeshi Kitano's 'Outrage', with various gangsters double crossing and back stabbing each other to take the newly available top spot in the organization, not to mention the sudden outbursts of shocking violence.

Hwang Jeong-min gives an outstanding performance as the slightly eccentric and edgy boss of the Shanghai branch who returns to Korea to stake his claim, with Choi Min-sik adding weight and depth to the grizzled cop trying to take him down, & Lee Jeong-jae stuck in the middle as the cop who's been in deep cover for close to a decade.

Strongly recommended.

Glad to hear that you liked it man. I agree with your comparison to OUTRAGE. I felt that too.

I understand where you're coming from regarding NAMELESS GANGSTER, but I'd recommend a second viewing for this one. I think it'll grow on you. And Choi Min-Sik's character is such a wacky guy... always seeming to say and do the wrong thing at the wrong time, that I really felt like I couldn't take my eyes off of him.

What about Moebius of Kim Ki Duk???

To be honest I don't think the two are really comparable - 'Moebius' is a wordless psycho-sexual tour de force from Korea's leading auteur, while 'The New World' is a slick gangster thriller from an up & coming director.

I will, one day! I recently watched 'The Yellow Sea' again (thanks again for providing the uncut version with subs!) & love Ha Jung-woo's performance in that, so if anything that should give me another reason to give 'Nameless Gangster' another watch at some point.

You should check out 'Fists of Legend' when you have the chance, Hwang Jeong-min plays the main character, I'll be curious to hear your thoughts!

You're more than welcome brother. I just lent that to my doctor recently (a newly converted Asian film fan), and he absolutely loved it. Great film!

It's on it's way as I write this. After reading your coverage of it I knew I had to see it. Brother Karlos has sent it my way. :nerd:

I really enjoyed it. I'm not usually a massive fan of gangster films but thought the story was great and it was brilliantly acted (especially Hwang Jeong Min). Might dig out Nameless Gangster and give that a go.
