Member GOLDEN DRAGON YIN-YANG Posted July 24, 2012 Member Share Posted July 24, 2012 Watching the Taiwanese film; 'Duel With the Devil'.. It struck me thus: The Taiwanese had a 'Golden Era' of kung fu movies in the 60's and 70's. Please share some of your favorites of this era. I say this: "the Taiwanese films of this era profoundly captured the essence of of the kung fu movie bug that affected us all on this forum". These so called Sword-Play movies had an undeniable magic surrounding them upon my first exposure. The cream of the crop please> GD Y-Y

I'll have to check out as many of these as I can. I've already got King of Kings and Elimination Pursuit on the way. Any other recommendations? Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted November 16, 2014 Member Share Posted November 16, 2014 No mention of Swordsman with an Umbrella with Mr. Gau? Secret of the Water Technique is a weird one. It's not that good but it's worth a watch.
Member NoKUNGFUforYU Posted November 16, 2014 Member Share Posted November 16, 2014 Polly Kuan did Rider of Revenge, Bravest Revenge and A Girl Fighter, all worth checking out! I will put in some more. There is a rare one, Ill Wind, floating around there worth catching. It's a small film, but it is a good western style, Hang 'em High type of tale. Does Ill Wind feature the Hang 'em High score by any chance? It'd be most appropriate!
Member NoKUNGFUforYU Posted November 16, 2014 Member Share Posted November 16, 2014 My mini review from Fuflix- ll Wind 1970 James Nam Just a really good, low budget wu xia, with tons of atmosphere. I was just really impressed with the acting and the story, on a very low budget without a lot of big stars. The dialogue is sparse and relies on the actors expressions to convey a lot of what is going on. They are up to the task. If you're looking for great fights, the choreography is nothing special, but the fights are involving as the characters are likable, so you root for them. Very few jumps or flying in the movie. The color on the copy I saw was very good in most parts, but there are a few washed out scenes. The story is probably cribbed from an old western, probably Italian, but who knows? The music is mostly Ennio Morricone, but well used.Shaws films are usually more polished, but I just really liked this one for what it is. Interestingly, like Black Tavern, most of the good guys are played by actors well known for playing heavies. Check it out! I've already got King of Kings and Elimination Pursuit on the way. Any other recommendations? Big Land Flying Eagle Butterfly Murders Deaf Mute Heroine Flame and Ice Hand Flower The Killer Jade Fox Lost Swordship Majesty Cat Matching Escort Moonlight Murderer My Blade My Life All worth checking out mate. See if you can find a decent copy of Veiling of Hidden Sword though, it's got the best weapon choreography of any of these films IMO.
