And paimeifist is right: David Chiang is great in The Blood Brothers. His performance and seeing Ti Lung sporting a stache are pretty much the only reason I'd recommend this one (the story is also interesting TBH), though the ending really has an impact as it drove me mad in how unfair and even how cynical it was - but it's also kinda realistic in that @$$holes get everything and seem above the rules, while good people never get what they should.

As far as David Chiang performances go, I'd have The Pirate ranking 3rd after NOAS and THO. He delivers here, as a fair and wise law officer going after a pirate (played by Ti Lung in what I consider among his best performances) and he also gets some nice action (I just love the scene where he is in a casino and he beats the crap out of the staff to leave - you don't Chiang that much in hand-to-hand combat scenes or he is not too good, so it was kinda surprising to see him break loose like that).

For me overall impression of THO goes bit down coz how dumbf*ck way clever Chiang character was killed. Had he been stabbed to back would have been better...

Good post GHW, and thanks for the in depth response. I'll post back here whenever I rewatch THO.

I disagree with you on David Chiang's performance in Water Margin though, I thought he did a good job, although his character may not be all that "likable". I feel the story to TWM starts off convoluted introducing too many characters, but it becomes apparent who the major players are, and what side which characters stand on pretty quickly IMO.

My favorite overall performances of his are Shaolin Mantis and Blood Brothers, but The Challenger is close to these two, and easily better than Blood Brothers in the fighting department.

I am surprised it seems you really aren't big on Blood Brothers, but I have seen others with similar views. I actually didn't care for it much the first time I saw it due to its lackluster action. Took me a second viewing to appreciate it for sure.

Chiang's character in TWM is a bit too perfect IMO - I feel this kind of character fits Fu Sheng better (must be that I saw a lot of Fu Sheng films before seeing TWM, but I couldn't stop thinking Fu Sheng could have done a better job than Chiang).

I was a bit disappointed in The Blood Brothers, although David Chiang's and Ti Lung's performances are really solid in this film. But the rest of the movie isn't really that great. CKT feels a bit like a cardboard (muscle with no brain, jealous guy who cheats on his wife 8 times a day... Meh), the action is okay but there's too little of it and finally, the ending is really bitter and feels really unfair - probably one of the most anger inducing endings I've seen.

Make sure to watch ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS soon after!

Other Shaw movies based on the classical novel "Water Margin" are TIGER KILLER and DELIGHTFUL FOREST which relate how Wu Song played by Ti Lung became one of the famous 108 rebels, and PURSUIT which tells the story of Leopard Head (or Panther Head in other translations) played by Yueh Hua. The chronological order from the book would be PURSUIT, TIGER KILLER, DELIGHTFUL FOREST, WATER MARGIN,  ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS but you can easily start with WATER MARGIN.

Is there an easy way to watch or track down a copy of Tiger Killer?  I’ve been curious about that one.  Really enjoy Delightful Forest and I want to see the rest of the story.
