The Mystery of Chess Boxing. I hadn't seen it in a while, and felt it was long overdue for a rewatch. Also needed to do a bit of research as well. Still love it!

Young Tiger AKA Police Woman AKA Rumble In Hong Kong (HK, 1973) from this Jackie Chan 3-DVD set (the other films are Fearless Hyena 2 and New Fist Of Fury):

picture.php?albumid=244&pictureid=6618

Overall, not that bad, but it's clearly not one of Jackie's finest works - he has a rather unusual (by Jackie's modern standards) role in this film (a henchman with a weird black thing on his face) and the action is nice to watch, but it's a rather slow movie with lots of exposition, flashbacks... Strange addition for a Jackie Chan set though as he is not a central character, but I guess it's better getting this in a set with two other films (even if FH2 and NFOF don't sound like fan-favorites) than getting the single DVD release - especially if the summary involving an orphan out for revenge is used on that one as well...

The action wasn't bad, all things considered. It was sort of fun to watch. My favorite bit was when two supporting characters are complaining about the media and exploitive movies, not realizing that they're characters in one. :D

Godfrey Ho worshipper: if you buy french jackie chan dvds, don't buy these red/yellow dvds since they're old (around 2001) and feature un-remastered picture.

Buy the Hong Kong Video release from 2007 like this one, they're remastered and look a lot better.

I just watched "Hapkido" for the first time (I got it in the recently released double bill with "Lady Whirlwind"). I really enjoyed it. The whole fight is a tight little bubble of carnage! One of the few films I can actually tolerate Carter Wong in too.

I don't think it's quite as good as "Broken Oath" and would have liked to see more Hapkido techniques used but, all in all, a really enjoyable, fight filled film.

While it's not bad in terms of action, I find there isn't much going on between the action scenes - just my 0.02$. And yeah, I found that bit on violence in medias (especially the hammering of the fact people are only into violent movies) and the fact only violence sells pretty ironic.

I do have a handful of those - La Hyène Intrépide (Fearless Hyena), Le Marin des Mers de Chine (Project A) and Mister Dynamite (Armour Of God) and a Chow Yun-Fat film called Peace Hotel. The packaging is really nice, it has some nice bonus features (original trailer notably) and you get the choice between French and Chinese (not sure if it's Cantonese or Mandarin) instead of only French like on the old Jackie Chan Collection ones.

Hand of death - been years since I watched it. A young Yuen Biao can be spotted as an extra near the beginning.

I THINK he also played the infiltrator shot with an arrow by James Tien later in the movie...been a while since I've seen it.

Phantom Kung Fu (Taiwan, 1979), from the Flying Fists Of Kung Fu 12-movie set

picture.php?albumid=244&pictureid=7075

Chang Yi stars in this one as the villain, a guy who masters a technique called "Palm of Death" (which causes his hands to smoke and a special tune to play whenever he uses it) and who must get a document from rebels. On his way are various rather forgettable rebels, though you have an old white haired leader with an incredibly deep voice, a funny guy who keeps renaming his clan and goofing around and 2 brothers who don't have much screen time but who are rather entertaining. There's also a guy who is dead and who keeps coming back to life to torment Chang Yi - the ghost aspect is interesting, the idea of a "ghost style" is creative and it gives the movie a certain edge (as it gets pretty boring - despite the fights involving Chang Yi and the comedic clan leader - in its second third, the rebels essentially talk and do planning).

Overall: it has funny moments, a great villain (although Chang Yi sounds like the leader of the Knights who say "Ni" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail at times, which is pretty funny) the fights are enjoyable to watch and the soundtrack is really cool. The opening theme is epic as hell, some cues are really nice and I loved the use of a little tune from Logan's Run at a point. Anyone knows of the music used in this one ? I swear the opening theme is from another movie.

There's actually a very well-written review of Phantom Kung Fu on kfc (not on the forum though):

http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/phantom-kung-fu-1979

It's more detailed than what I said (you get some actors' name, a more in-depth plot summary...) and there are several aspects I must agree on (the 2 brothers who drop in all of a sudden are indeed pretty cool, Chang Yi's acting and appearance are really fun to watch...) - very nice read.

Blood of Dragon with Wang Yu 3.5/6 , doesn't set the world on fire but the end is okay.

I find "Ninja strikes back" and "Enter GoD" much more entertaining than "Clones" , oh well ;)

The Tormentor with Chang Yi, which was ok, not great and One Armed Magic Nun. I was prepared for a little more than I got with that flick, and watched it more out of a sense of history. Just really bad choreography and photography, as well as static camera setting and color. It looked like a colorized film from the 1940's or maybe, at best an early 60s' cheap Italian sword and sandal movie. Suet Nei was smoking hot though!

The tormentor has a really stupid finale, though it does contain a few good fights with Tung Li, who seemed like he could actually fight off screen as well.

Secret of Chinese Kung Fu - dull basher style flick, but the choreography is more shapes. Leading man Sze Ma Lung is a poor actor and weak fighter, but thankfully villians Lo Lieh and Lung Fei stop it being a total waste of time.

Bonus points for having the following exhange:

"I agree boss, but still. but still..."

"But still? But still what?".

Revisited Jackie Chan's 'Dragon Fist' And it's still as good as it was when I first saw this, many, many moons ago.

For me this is probably Jackie's finest film from his early releases, no slap stick, just straight up hand to hand, with a few shapes thrown into the mix!

Even James Tien looks decent and 'Shallow Head' Eagle Han Yin shows his early promise. Yen Shi Kwan also stars, not a lot of fighting from him, but his opening fight with Hsu Hsia, sets the tone for a excellent movie. 4/5

Bless:cool:

^Dragon Fist is excellent...

I revisited today with friends "china armed escort" ( god bless bigrogie and team who made me see this) and it is 10/10 movie. Great storyline, fights are 1st class. I liked that "chair" concept in the end, made me think of "bastard swordsman"...

I haven't seen this one (nor did I know of it) but it doesn't sound that bad to me - it seems to have a Big Boss feel actually (though I'm not a big fan of this one, I must say it's not THAT bad).
