Member Vegeta84 Posted May 22, 2012 Member Share Posted May 22, 2012 AnimEigo only two weeks after releasing 13 Assassins for release have put up The Great Killing to buy on their website. Have seen this film, but have heard nothing but great things. Also, 13 Assassins was pretty sweet. Not as good as Miikes version, but still pretty damn good. Member BlackLamaFaction Posted May 22, 2012 Member Share Posted May 22, 2012 An amazing film. Kudo's best work. One of the most intense end sequences I have ever seen put to film. I wrote a short review of this film a while back on the Samurai and Yakuza reference thread if anyone is interested. I have got to give Animeigo props on this one. This film is part 2 of a non continuous trilogy along with 13 Assassins and 11 Samurai, it would be great to see those released at some point as well. Like Vegeta84 said in the above post, 13 Assassins is already out. And as reported earlier on this forum, 11 Samurai is also coming this year
Member waywardsage Posted May 22, 2012 Member Share Posted May 22, 2012 Good to see. Personally, I'm going to wait till the price drops to a reasonable $12.99 like Sword of Desperation did.

I just meant it would have been nice to see them released as a trilogy in one set the way that Wildside did it.

Yeah, that's what i'm hoping with my pre-order at Amazon, they usually go down on prices but gonna have to wait a little longer, release date is July 3rd... Member waywardsage Posted May 25, 2012 Member Share Posted May 25, 2012 The price should drop to $13. I think they just sell them early for $20. If you just CAN'T WAIT!!! I almost cant. But I'm trying to exercise self restraint.
Member Vegeta84 Posted May 28, 2012 Author Member Share Posted May 28, 2012 So I just finished watching The Great Killing and I must say it's a very different type of samurai film. The final battle probably had 200 extras and it was one of the most realistic/ungraceful battles I've seen. Most of the swordplay is flailing and it's as if a punch of guys with no real experience were given swords and were told to battle. However, it fits perfectly with the tone of the film as it takes place during peace time and practically all the characters have no experience in battle. It's a bleak film with a very realistic sense of violence and torment. Not a film you will leave happy, but a film you won't forget. AnimEigo did a great job and hopefully we get many more Samurai films soon.
Member BlackLamaFaction Posted May 29, 2012 Member Share Posted May 29, 2012 Great observation about how the Samurai would have no experience in real battle. I remember thinking the same thing about how ungraceful the action was. In real life it would take an amazing amount of skill to kill with one slice, and surely not every Samurai in the clan specializes in fencing. I did the think the end battle was quite spectacular, Kudo predated Spielbergs use of documentary style battle in Private Ryan by at least 3 decades. I also remember joking with my girlfriend about how it must have felt to be the lord in the palanquin as he was being dragged through all of that madness by his exhausted escorts. Another thing that was remarkable about that end scene was you could glance around at any inch of the screen and there was action going on, it must have been exciting to direct such a large amount of extras.
