Has the Thunderclap remaster from Celestial/Ziieagle Box shown up anywhere? I know we have the low quality one from you.ku. Has anyone either subbed that one or seen/gotten the real quality one from the box?

This is what I'm wondering - just picked up Revenge of the Corpse & that weren't a youku rip, seems straight from the box, good quality & well subbed with proper frame rate, not like the youku TKAM & knock you down dad doing the rounds - where did Corpse come from??? I just picked it up from a guy who picked it up from a guy etc... didn't have any others unfortunately - if that's out there straight from the box there's GOT to be others. Where's Thunderclap & Reckless Cricket, etc?

I have been dying to see Thunderclap, but have been holding off watching the bad quality version I have, in hopes for the remastered version to eventually come out.

I will be screening Revenge of the Corpse this coming Monday in the Chamber Cinema, for those of you who may be interested in watching it online.

Thanks to my brother KB for hooking it up.

I definitely remember reading on some forums somewhere (poss this one) Reckless was on there. I've been misinformed by someone who must have been misinformed in that case then.

I wasn't sure whether to start a new thread or resurrect an old one - but I finally got round to watching Thunderclap. And I have to say I was left feeling underwhealmed by it.

Some of the action is good although a bit too undercranked at times. Chen Kuan Tai and Ku Feng are there, but unfortunately neither are really used to their full potential. On the plus side we do get to see Wang Li in action, which is always nice, and the Lion man is excellent - probably the best thing about the film. If you enjoy those Chinese fantasy films that have a mish mash storyline (I don't mean that as an insult, I like 'em too) this is still worth looking up, but to me something about it felt like a film made past the studios prime.

Some of my favourite Shaws were made in the early 80s, however I've noticed that in some of those made in the studios very final years the magic just seems to be gone. Perhaps I'm being unfair - and I'll admit the quality of the version I watched was acceptable, but not a crystal clear copy.

Of the unreleased Shaws, this is nowhere near the level of To Kill a Mastermind IMO.

It was directed by Tony Leung Siu Hung. It was his first as a director. He was also the choreographer and played Lion. It was unfinished(you can tell) and not released in HK. Its nothing to get overly excited about but I love the action. the lion character and Leung is one of my boys. CKT and KF were not underused as the picture is not about them. It's about Max Mok and Robert Mak's characters.

He talks about it here:

I think Shaws really showed their age by 1980, 81. The Venom's were in every other Kung Fu movie, and their fights looked more like Homoerotic dancing then combat, which is fine if you like that, btw, and the stories were more and more reactionary. I know they were trying to get into Jackie Chan turf- Mercenaries from HK and HK Playboys, with Wong Jing, but it was too late, and Fu Sheng's death did not help. As much hate as he seems to get here, people have no idea what a big star he was at the time. Of course, Michael Hui's comedies were raking in 4 times what most of the most successful martial arts movies were making in HK, so Shaws was hoping to look overseas. The problem there was the Ninja craze, as well as movies like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. I think these wacky movies were more a sign of desperation then creativity.

BaronK, thanks for the interview. When he says the film was released in an unfinished state.. the version I saw had effects, I'm wondering if these were missing in the initial release he saw, or if there are even more effects he wanted that never made it (meaning the film genuinely is unfinished)?

NoKUNGFU, I am a fan of 80s Shaws. Masked Avengers, Flag of Iron, Human Lanterns, 8 Diagram Polefighter - there's some of my favourites. I was thinking more about how the "feel" and atmosphere of the very final films changed a bit, Crazy Shaolin Disciples, Young Vagabond.. Thunderclap too, something about the production doesn't seem the same. They have more of a made for TV feel. What you say about Shaws loosing viewers is true, I wonder if the budgets were cut accordingly? Despite having seen many of the studios films, I'm no expert on the history of the studio itself.

I'm just looking at a list of Shaws made in the final years. 1983 contains the last classic - 8 Diagram Polefighter. '83 itself contains some other good films like Lady Assassin. But looking at the films after '83 its only really Secret Service of Imperial Court and maybe New Tales of the Flying Fox that jump out at me.

I do get a TV vibe from latter day Shaws - heck, most of the canned music was in British shows at the same time.

The freezing lasts only for few seconds, but it's still annoying...

By the way, if someone here has also succeeded in taking the movies from the Zii, send me a pm, please, there are some titles I'm still looking for, thanks.

I just watched the first 5 minutes of Thunderclap on Celestial’s YouTube channel. It’s not subbed and the quality isn’t that great. But it looks awesome! Is this available anywhere with subtitles, or even dubbed?

THUNDERCLAP was one of the films on the Ziieagle box (an expensive digital storage thing that Celestial sold with hundreds of Shaw Brothers films on it in slightly above VCD level quality) and had embedded English and Chinese subtitles.

Thank you for the info. Is that the only place this crazy movie is available subtitled or English dubbed?
