A live action adaptation of the video game series TWISTED METAL is in the works for Sony Pictures.

Dark Horizons reveals that the film will be directed and written by Brian Taylor, one-half of the team behind the CRANK films and the very soon to be released (as in this Friday) GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE. This will be the first time Taylor will be without his frequent collaborator Mark Neveldine.

"The story will revolve around an underground event that pits a number of combatants in a fight to the death in armored and heavily weaponized cars. The sole survivor will get any wish granted.

The race proprietor is Calypso, a string-puller dedicating to examining the human condition. The film will include such characters as Sweet Tooth, a homicidal clown who drives an ice cream truck, and Doll Face, a young woman who is trapped behind a porcelain mask and who drives an 18-wheeler."

Producing are Avi and Ari Arad.

I don't know about the movie but I have fond memories of playing the game on the PS1 with my old roommate back in the '90s. There wasn't much of a plot though, just arena combat with cars.

I wish someone would do a movie adaptation of a game called Interstate '76. I think it would work better as an action film and yet would still have the car-vs-car combat.
