What would you have rather seen nominated (and in what category)?

In the Best Actor category, they could've replaced Lau Ching-Wan for Overheard 2 with Daniel Wu for the same film or Donnie Yen for Wu Xia. Lau Ching-Wan always does a great job but I honestly felt it didn't bring any real drive to the story the way Wu or Koo did it. He also brought a sense of playing his usual screen persona which can be seen in many of his films.

I haven't seen seen Hark's 3D film but anything made by the man these days doesn't interest me anymore. Just watching the trailer gives me the vision of how sloppy he makes his new films. Peter Chan for Wu Xia deserved the Best Director nomination here.

The Sorcerer and the White Snake... No comment. I'm fine with the rest of the nominations in the Best Action Design category but a film with uninspiring action scenes and cheap-looking CGI truly surprises. Donnie's work on The Lost Bladesman is the better testament to a film getting nominated for its' action choreography.

I also think Wu Xia should have at least gotten a best director nom for Peter Chan, and also a best picture nom. I think we all know Deannie Ip will win best actress. definitely surprised that Donnie didn't get a 2nd nom for best action with The Lost Bladesman, though I thought Wu Xia was better anyway. Sorcerer and the White Snake is way below the standards of both Ching Siu-Tung and Jet Li. Still haven't seen Life Without Principle, but with the HK dvd out next week, thank God the wait's almost over. I liked Overheard 2, but I expect a better performance from Lau in LWP, hopefully he'll win the best actor, To always brings out the best in him. Haven't yet seen Tsui Hark's new one, but I agree with DIP, the trailer makes it look messy. Many of Tsui's films tend to be that way, but the best ones still manage to be messy and entertaining at the same time. Tsui is certainly one of the most ambitious, but the last of his films that I really liked a lot was Time and Tide.

Predictably A SIMPLE LIFE cleaned up at the HKFA. And deservedly so! For all who haven’t seen it, rest assured that this ain’t no, er… „arthouse“ fodder, rather a film that everybody can connect with and its recent success in HK shows that it really touches a nerve with people of all ages. Makes you laugh and cry at the same time, just a wonderfully composed character study that never descends into melodrama and expresses a HK sensitivity like no other film in recent memory. Wonder why Paul Chun as the ever-horny senior sinner didn’t snatch a supporting actor award!

Other than that, I feel that THE WOMAN KNIGHT OF MIRROR LAKE was criminally overlooked and that Peter Chan Ho-Sun only walked out with the awards for “Best Original Film Score” and “Best Cinematography” for WU XIA is a crying shame. All in all, another so-so year for HK cinema.
