The latest Korean gangster movie just hit the theater about a week ago. The title in English as far as I know is THE NAMELESS GANGSTER (Beomjoewaui Jeonjaeng : Nappeunnomdeul Jeonseongsidae) 범죄와의 전쟁 : 나쁜놈들 전성시대

the main actors are Choi Min-sik (Oldboy, I Saw the Devil) and Ha Jung-woo (Yellow Sea, The Chaser, Time)

This movie deals with those who lived an intense life back in the 1990s in Busan when the government announced crime and war.

Since I was asked to produce a piece of artwork for Mr. Choi (being presented to him this Saturday at the New York Asian Film Festival) I had to check out his latest movie to see if it warranted inclusion in the painting. It did!

It's a very good film and Choi Min-Sik puts in another of his fantastic, multi-dimensional performances. This is a very solid drama about a peculiar guy and his involvement with all manner of shady dealings. There's an unforgettable "light my cigarette" scene between two characters (neither of which is Choi) that I'll never forget.

I definitely recommend it.

I'm looking forward to seeing this for the second time... WITH Choi Min-Sik at the festival! :nerd: My family hasn't seen it yet, so they're very excited. But more than that, meeting Mr. Choi and watching OLDBOY on the big screen has got my son super psyched. He loves OLDBOY as much as me (and most of us).

One Armed Boxer

I just got through watching this one last night, directed & written by Yoong Jong-bin, and staring Choi Min-sik & Ha Jeong-woo (probably the busiest actor in Korea at the moment, with standout roles in both director Na Hong-jin's 'The Chaser' & 'The Yellow Sea'), as Kung Fu Bob mentioned this is a solid movie.

The problem for me was that being solid wasn't enough. Several reviews have likened 'Nameless Gangster' to a Korean version of 'Goodfellas', and sure enough the influence of Martin Scorsese seems to be imprinted throughout the films run-time.

While the plot does have plenty of similarities with Scorsese's gangster classic, there are an abundance of visual references lifted from his other works as well. We get the phone bashing over the head scene from 'Goodfellas', the getting beaten by baseball bats then buried alive scene from 'Casino', we even get a scene of Choi Min-sik pointing a gun at himself in the mirror and practicing what he'd say if it was for real a la 'Taxi Driver'.

While solidly made, excellently acted, and convincingly told, I could never get past the feeling that I was watching the Korean version of a Scorsese gangster movie, and unfortunately that's not why I watch Korean movies. I watch them for the original plots, the unflinching violence, the blacker than black humor, and so much else which was just missing from 'Nameless Gangster'.

I think for those unfamiliar with Korean cinema that hold no expectations this will be an extremely enjoyable movie, and no doubt the comparisons to 'Goodfellas' will be seen as favorable ones, but for me the similarities ended up being the reason why I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have.

I give it a cautious recommendation, well told it is, but original it isn't.

Ah, I definitely understand One-Armed Boxer's problems with the film.

Funny, GOODFELLAS was on TV last night and we watched it as we fell asleep. I think that's a perfect film. I would not compare NAMELESS GANGSTER with GOODFELLAS for that reason. It would build up people's expectations way too much.

I still thought it was very good, despite the "Scorceseisms" it utilized. In fact, I enjoyed it much more the second time I watched it. Choi Min-Sik is amazing in this film. It seems he gets to play every emotion imaginable with this character. Ha Jeong-Woo is, as always, fantastic as well.

Nameless Gangster : Rules of the Time:

Ik-hyeon who gets involved in drug dealing while carrying out his duty as a customs officer meets a mob boss, Hyeong-bae, and learns that they are distantly related. Together they expand the mob business doing each other’s favors but when the government declares a war on crime and the two partners get entangled in the web of conspiracy and betrayal.

This film looks really good, I cannot wait to see it.
