This afternoon, I watched Godfrey Ho's Hitman The Cobra on DVD:

EAcw0cd1njl.jpg

Sadly, it's a German import and it only has a german audio track and no subtitles (it's a very cheaply produced DVD and the only bonus is a (rather nice) photo gallery) so though my knowledge of the German language isn't too bad, it's a bit hard to follow. :squigglemouth: But I have to deal with it, since this is (to my knowledge) the only DVD release this movie got.

Trivia: Hitman The Cobra is sometimes mistaken for Hands Of Death (the mistake can even be seen on such websites as IMDb), another Godfrey Ho movie starring Richard Harrison as the good guy and Mike Abbott as the main villain (but HTC is more of a war movie (based on a Filipino movie) while HOD is more of a ninja flick).

Been watching a lot of the mega monster movies of the 80s and 90s like Friday the 13th/Nightmare On Elm Street/Child's Play... If I can ask the forum members of this board, what is the best horror franchise??? I'd be surprise if someone listed the Saw series, lol....

Personally I love Friday the 13th 1-8 ie the 80's run.

Nightmare on Elm Street is good from 1-5, though part 2 is pretty dire.

Love Child's Play 1-3, actually like the sequels more than the original... anything after that can suck it.

House 1 and 2, even though 2 is a little more fantasy/comedy. If you count The Horror Show with Lance Henriksen and Brion James as part 3 (it was sold as such in europe) I would say it's almost as good as part 1. Part 4 is not too bad, not too great.

Critters 1 and 2 are great, 3 is somewhat watchable, 4 is laughably bad.

Poltergeist is one of my favourite movies of all time. 2 is good, 3 is less so. Carrie Ann was older, No Craig T. Nelson or JoBeth Williams etc.

I think the Halloweens kinda lost the magic with each sequel, or in the case of part 3, went totally off the fucking rails. But 1 and 2 are classics, 4 and 5 I barely remember.

Alien series is more sci fi in my book, but the first one is probably one of the best movies ever made, part 2 is a kickass action flick, part 3 stumbles for sure, but still has redeemable qualities, and 4 is, if nothing else, entertaining 90's space action.

Can't think of more right now. My taste steers towards the 80's early 90's "horror" flicks, which usually had comedy and drama elements to them as well. All that modern day torture porn is retarded to me...

Only saw some of the movies from franchises, like the first Friday the 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street 3, ... so I can't judge whole franchises. As far as horror goes, I'm more a fan of stand alone films or of the old classics like

Poltergeist is one of my favourite movies of all time. 2 is good, 3 is less so. Carrie Ann was older, No Craig T. Nelson or JoBeth Williams etc.

Never heard Poltergeist (great film) had had sequels.

Only saw the first 3. Felt 1 was okay at best, 2 was fun but not that great and 3 was my favorite. An interesting (though not very well-known) thing with the franchise is that Halloween wasn't meant to be a franchise all about a character like Friday the 13th or NOES were. It was to be a series of various movies related to Halloween, hence why H3 has nothing to do with 1 and 2. (heard that from a guy on another forum who was a HUGE Halloween fan)

I totally agree, modern horror flicks are really poor and uninventive. When it's not all about torture (Saw) or really stupid, it's basically remakes (Halloween, NOES, Friday the 13th) or rip offs (taking from Jaws, classic slashers,...).

I was pretty obsessed with the Phantasm series when I was younger... and I think other people still are. Really entertaining and a little bit epic in its own right!

Phantasm very very underrated franchise, better than the Hellraiser series that's for sure... To me Friday The 13th is the best horror franchise, the kills are inventive/fun doesn't get repetitive and Jason is a badass.. Child's Play series come a close second.. Freddy Kreuger, I don't find him funny and his one liners are kinda corny...

I'm with Godfrey Ho on Halloween III. In a world full of generic horror sequels Halloween III is the one film that had balls to be original and fascinating. No, it's not perfect and it's got nothing on the original, but as a slasher sequel it's extraordinary and one of the best ever made. I hate to see it bashed just because it dared to be original (and miles better than Halloween II).

It's quite interesting indeed, and original, as you say. It sadly gets knocked off but had it not been released as an Halloween, I'm sure it could have done well.

I just watched the New Berserk film series well two of em. I had to catch it because the orignal is my fav anime series of all time. Always good to see your fav get a new treatment. Well sometimes. I enjoyed it. Kinda threw me into a flashback Seems ten eleven years ago to me is when anime reached its apex here in the states. The anime section used to be huge I had a subscription to animerica and Newtype. Nowadays there is still an anime section but to me it seems its not as big as it used to be. Same with the games thats why I'm an Altus fan. Anyways.

I agree Friday the 13th 1-7 is my fav horror franchise as well.

I, personally, would not take too much advice on films from Godfrey Ho. He, to me, has never made a good movie in his life.

P.S. I agree with TibetanWhiteCrane about how bad Halloween 3 was. It should of never been made or should at least of had a different name.

Bad Boys (1982) ---- stars Sean Penn, Esai Morales, Clancy Brown, Eric

Gurry, Ally Sheedy, Reni Santoni.

Set in Chicago, SP is a trouble-making Irish youth who kill the kid brother of EM's character. He gets sent to a juvenile detention center. EG is his pyromaniac cellmate and CB is a long-timer who gives him grief. Eventually, EM gets himself sent there in order to get revenge.

It's been 25 yrs or better since I've seen this. Good flick. There are a couple of cringe-worthy moments. Of course the buildup is for the throwdown between SP and EM's characters at the end. It's good, but not as good as I remembered it. Thought it had more fisticuffs in it but it's more of a brawl really. Still, good stuff. Glad I watched it again.

FW Murnau's The Last Laugh, a 1924 German expressonist movie. Very good movie, though quite sad (despite a happy ending).

Great film. The happy ending feels a bit weird. Emil Jannings is great in that role though. If you have not checked out already, watch him in The Last Command which can be found in the Von Sternberg Criterion set (a highly recommend this as well because the two other films there Underworld and The Docks of New York are also quite impressive).

I found the intertitle announcing that improbable happy ending to be quite funny. And I agree, Emil Jannings is really great in this film, but I still prefer him as Mephisto in Faust, which was released 2 years afterwards. If the telling of a movie being great thanks to its villain is true, then FW Murnau's Faust is clearly one of the greatest movies ever made.

The US version of Godzilla Raids Again AKA Gigantis The Fire Monster. While it's enjoyable, it's clearly not as good as the original Japanese cut. :squigglemouth:

It's a Godfrey Ho movie called Secret Executioners. Based on a South Korean film starring Wong Cheng Li (Silver Fox) to which Ho added 4 or 5 fight scenes which are purely hilarious. Here's the Hong Kong Cinemagic entry:

http://www.hkcinemagic.com/en/movie.asp?id=7136

Apparently, the DVD can be found on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Buddhist-Fist-Tiger-Claws-Part/dp/B0006SSOP4/ref=sr_1_2?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1347031473&sr=1-2&keywords=secret+executioners

I have it on DVD, but it only has a French dub and is Region 2.
