No, but I've heard that it was way more violent and crazy.

It is insanely more violent to the point of where you feel Ellis started repeating himself too much.  There is some great dialog in the book (a lot captured on film).  I love the fashion talk throughout the book (someone said I reminded them a bit of Bateman but I digress).

Now I have to return some videotapes.

Does he start talking about random pop culture things in the book too? That was my favorite part of the movie. It reminded me of Francis York Morgan from Deadly Premonition.

Isn’t that right, Zach?

Yes.  Especially the music where he goes over in much more detail.

Cool. I think I'll see about getting a copy of the book then.

Torso Sergio Martino

Very cool giallo. Awesome locations, eye candy a plenty, pretty good suspense. It also presents men the way they are, truly pathetic 😜 each shot of men has them gazing in awe at women and one of them ends up a deranged killer.

The finale in the house was very good and I was specially surprised by the one on one basher styled kung fu fight scene to end it all.

One of my fave gialli, glad you liked it. That finale in the house is when Torso becomes alive and you breath with it till the end.

By Dawn's Early Light (1990) Good WW3 'what if' drama. Recommended.

Killer Fish (1979) Interesting cast in B movie thriller.

Calamity the Cow (1967) Usual CFF hi-jinks in B&W which makes it look even more dated (1950's)

Children shouldn’t play with dead things 1972

I can’t help it, I love it. I find it creepy, horror on a budget, cabin in the woods style, great make up on the zombies, brilliant zombies rising from the earth scene, eery music or sounds.

These old horror films often come without real plot and they’re all the better for it. Everything is just set up for the carnage to come.

If I am to make a top 40 greatest horror films of all time this is in it, right up there with the evil dead to name another one with similar atmosphere.

L'il Abner 3.5/6 , its a bit tedious......based on comic strip , Newmar has a few dance scenes but no dialogue. Abner & Daisy Mae are planning wedding and the govt is planning to move the town due to a-bomb testing.

Gremlins 5/6  , great monster fun

The Return of Godzilla (1984) The longer, original cut that became Godzilla 1985. A great sequel to the 1954 original that ignores everything in between, where the Big G had become something of a parody and a huge puppy for children. For once there are no rival monsters, aliens or goofy characters. Godzilla is back to being a scary threat and the addition of a cold-war background adds to the good story. Good performances all round from the cast the only down side being a crappy pop ballad that closes the film.

The Groundstar Conspiracy (1972) Starts off well with explosions galore and Michael Sarrazin running from them dessed in a silver jump suit...sci fi connections? Sadly, not really. George Peppard is some kind of hard arsed security chief assigned to plug a leak at the exploding base, going to all sorts of lengths to try and prise information from amnesiac Sarrazin- who goes on the run. It's not bad in an undemanding way, particularly watching it on a wet afternoon when there's nothing else on the box.

Zombie Holocaust 1980

Love it. Feels like a scooby doo mystery episode but with tons of gore and nudity. Tropical setting, zombies, cannibals all played with a straight face. Best described as a combination of Fulci’s Zombie and Deodato’s Cannibal holocaust, hence the title zombie holocaust lol

Crazy Rich Asians (2018: Jon M. Chu): this was big box office hit that looked so-so to me so I put it off for a while.  I even had one friend telling me how good it was (not really a movie person).  It was OK with some serious flaws.

The beginning was embarrassing.  Thematically it has nothing to do with the film other than to create a faux feeling of racism with the old switch of -- you cannot stay here because of your race, but of course they are now the new owners.  You remove this sequence and it helps the movie, not hurts it.

Almost everyone here feels more like an archetype than a full-fledged human being.  If the plot was more than a warmed-over romantic comedy, then you can get over how flat the characters are or very annoying as in Ken Jeong who could create a serial killer out of a saint. I do not need to go over the plot because you will know the plot and the trajectory of the plot.

Michelle Yeoh is a good actor, but she does not get much to do other than be the harsh potential mother-in-law (with also a harsh mother – so much more could have been done with this relationship) who, of course, will have a very obvious character arc.

I’m not sure on Awkwafina.  Sure, she is annoying, but does not reach the levels of Ken Jeong and she can be funny.  Definitely a unique voice like a mixture of a smoker and a female lead singer of a Phillip Anselmo cover band.

The film looked nice enough.  It had decent cinematography and a playfulness with CGI pop-ups that is nothing new, but sometimes worked here.

Rom-coms tend to follow particular patterns so if you have seen a few you will know everything that goes on here from the crazy friends/family members, to the falling out and to the reconciliation.  Some of the secondary plots are abysmal and do not work like the one with Astrid and her husband.  Was this supposed to be a rah-rah moment where you root for her.  I still felt both were at fault and her giving up rather easily (real life more messy).

I have no interest in reading the book nor seeing this again.

Dr Cyclops 1940

These special effects looked way better than other similar films of its time, the miniature vs giant objects fx were great, especially compared to for example 1958s attack of the puppet people. So I was impressed but the film often had this whimsical feel partly due to the terrible score and completely forgettable characters. Overall a fun film, it only missed some giant bugs to torment our characters.
The incredible shrinking man was more spectacular and exciting but this purely visually might have been better.

The Last Hunter (1980) I saw this once back in the early days of video in the UK. Back then I thought it was a good war/action flick. It doesn't really hold up for me now.

Iron master 1983

Pretty good prehistoric flic, taking inspiration from films like conan the barbarian, Quest for fire and stuff like when dinosaurs ruled the earth. There are no dinosaurs though which doesn’t mean it is a realistic film as this movie deals with the discovery of the sword. This plot point probably comes from the viking mythology?

Seems like the film had a decent budget, lots of extras, villages, outdoors and all that stuff.  They went light on the gore though which is a shame, the film was also pretty repetitive.
I like these kind of films despite the inaccuracies. Quest for fire is one of the greatest films of all time, this one is not but it is entertaining for sure.

Blue Ice (1992). Sort of thick -eared spy thriller that was old fashioned back when it was made. Michael Caine was too bloody old for all that stuff, but Sean Young (lousy actress) was yummy to look at and that f*****g jazz soundtrack was soooo annoying!!!:angry

Banshees Of  Inisherin

Colin arrel,Brendan Gleeson & director Martin McDonagh who made the classic In Bruges reteam for this dark comedy/drama set during the irish civil war . On a remote irish village Gleeson decide one day he doesn't want to friends with Farrell anymore and goes out of his way to show he means it. Critically lauded, very well acted, i found it heavily depressing.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

i love Michelle Yeoh. However this flavour of the month multiverse quirky drama i'm sorry to say for me is an overrated borefest. Ticks all the flavour of the month boxes including various aspect ratios, over length etc. Definitely not for me.

Seriously Red

A young Aussie girl and Dolly Parton fanatic loses her job and decides to follow her dream of being a Dolly tribute act. Quite liked this one, quirky and low key but well made.

M3GAN

Another recent film that had very decent reviews, about a girl robot who slowly goes out of control. It was ok but nothing special.

Deranged (1974) I was surprised how well made this early take on Ed Gein was made. Usually this sort of US 'regional' horror flick is pretty slap-dash in all departments. Blossom Roberts gave a really good, creepy portrayal of the killer 'Ezra' and the atmosphere was reminiscent of the TCM. Could have done without the on-screen narrator though.

- Mighty Joe Young 1949

King Kong is a mere trial run for this, I love King Kong but for me it is just waiting for the action to start. It was a technical tour de force but Mighty Joe Young is Schoedsack/O' Briens masterpiece. This movie has the same spectacle, probably even better, it is intense, emotional, funny, great characters. The 3 big set pieces are fantastic but that finale is mind-blowing. Movie magic. 10/10

- Food of the Gods 1976

This is Bert I Gordon's masterpiece. This is B movie schlock and his entire roster of 50s science fiction/monster films was the necessary experience to craft this film. It all comes together here. There is limited budget and yet he was able to make this film exciting. Not all the special effects worked the way they should but most of them were spot on. Compared to the similar 50s films he made this has actually interesting with lovable/hateable characters, there is not a lot of dusty talky exposition as was the case in the 50s. We got straight to the action, not a minute felt wasted. Some scenes even managed to feel disturbing. Hat off! 10/10

- The Ghost Galleon 1974

The third and final film I saw the last 2 days and it was a hat trick of perfection for me. The most effective blind death movie because there is no escape, the characters are trapped on a gloomy cobweb filled ship. The zombies/skeletons look awesome. The primitive special effects just add to the charm, it all feels like a spooky story written in a teenage comic book. This is the kind of stuff that filled my imagination when I was younger. I can't get enough of these undead slowly rising from their tombs. It doesn't make a lot of sense but that's not the point to love these movies. It is all about the atmosphere and it is foggy thick in this one! 10/10

Galaxy of Terror (1981). I had high hopes for this one, Alien knock-off, produced by Roger Corman and James Cameron making a small budget look bigger ( and having a dry run for Aliens ). What a mess this is though. Stupid dialogue, stupid character names, lousy acting from the eclectic cast and a by the end a plot so nonsensical even Brandon Tenfold couldn't figure it out. Highlights (or is that lowlights?) include a giant maggot rapist (I kid you not),

Commando Leopard (1986?) Well shot (no pun) gung-ho action starring Lewis Collins (he'd have been a good 007) miscast as a South American rebel leader fighting against a corrupt dictator and his sadistic henchman Klaus Kinski. Usual Antonio Margheriti detailed model work with a spectacular plane explosion. A bit talky, which suffers at times due to the dub job. Looks to have had a pretty large budget too.

Galaxy Of Terror had an awesome poster but yep movie is crap.

Plane

Gerrard Butler, a younger version of Liam Neeson is back in a not to bad actioner, playing a pilot who's plane crash lands in a jungle carrying around 14 passengers, cabin crew and a FBI agent bringing back an extradited Murderer.Pretty decent, not acion packed but an engaging storyline and when the action comes it's pretty decent.

Death Wish

Classic Charles Bronson in his signature role as vigilante Paul Kersey. Michael Winner made some rubbish but he could be a very capable director and this one is excellently done.

Terror On The Prairie

Gina Carano has to protect her son and baby against a murderous gang of outlaws .Not bad,a little overlong even at only 107 minutes.

The people that time forgot 1977

The sequel to "the land that time forgot". It is actually a direct follow up where a new crew will go back to find and pick up the two survivors of the first film. The first half plays out like the first film with lots of charming dino action with miniatures and background projection etc but then it turns into the prototype of a genre that would boom in the 80s namely the sword and sorcery film. It was actually cleverly done, the 2 survivors' knowledge turned the existing prehistoric tribes into an Iron Age tribe which results into sword wielding warriors in Samurai armor. It also predates the typical dungeon and creepy looking castle sets that we would see in films like Krull or the Beastmaster.

It basically feels like an 80s movie, the characters are more colorful, the monsters action is more plentiful, it is a better film than the first one. Overall it is a fun two parter if you like the adventure/prehistoric/monster/sword and sorcery genres. I know I do!

Codename Wild Geese (1984) The first collaboration between Lewis Collins and Antonio Margheriti is a jolly good action romp that puts Collins as a Para Mercenary in charge of the usual rag-tag band of men assigned with torching an Asian dictator's Heroin stocks. Along for the ride is no other than Lee Van Cleef (who has some great lines) as an ace copter pilot. Extended cameos feature Ernest Borgnine as a DEA agent (really?) and Klaua Kinski in his usual evil bastard persona (and a hilarious cut- glass accent dub). Once again Margerhiti's minature work is prominent and explosive. He truly was the Derek Meddings of Italian cinema. Mimsy Farmer pops up as a reporter for no reason but thankfully there's no romantic involvement with Lewis Collins. Altogether a pretty good way to fill 104 mins for undemanding action junkies!

Emmanuelle 1974

yes the porn film, the dialogue is so cringeworthy, the scenes in itself are hilarious, purely male fantasy but apparently it was conceived from a book written by a woman. You get this girl who starts masturbating during a house visit in front of the host. You get a complete stranger almost raping a girl in a packed airplane, when the guy is done another passenger takes over. You can’t make this up in your wildest fantasies…

Other than the magnificent landscapes there was nothing that raised my blood pressure because the sex scenes are completely boring and overacted

I recently watched this out of curiosity and because it was filmed in Thailand. I found it really offensive when it came to portraying the Thai people. They were made to come off as borderline uncivilized and savages with the French there observing them in their native habitat. To me it felt more like the Europeans were lazy, hedonistic bums with too much money and too much free time on their hands. Scenery and landscapes were great, but an overall strange film. Not sure how this spawned over 60 related movies?

How the hell did Kinski ended up in here? Wonder how Margheriti handled his raging persona on the set...
