Just finished watching Jackie Chan's Project A. I am not really into Jackie's non period films, but I liked this one. Gotta love films that include Jackie, Samo and Yuen. BTW, who is the pirate captain in this film? Seems like I have seen this guy around before. I have Project A2 also which I will probably get to tomorrow night after work.

Project A2 is a lot of fun.

The super cool pirate is Dick Wei. That huge kick that Samo gave to him injured his back pretty bad. He was amazing in Project A with the way he keeps hitting the ground and throwing his body around with no padding. You may recognize him fighting JAckie Chan in Heart of the Dragon and Twinkle Twinkle My Lucky Stars, 2 of the greatest fight scenes ever filmed. If you want to see more of him in great roles, check out Code of Honor, Millionaire's Express, Carry On Pickpocket, and many other movies. http://www.hkcinemagic.com/en/people.asp?id=155

Life of Ninja- stupid movie, good fights. Sun Jung Chi has a nice cameo, and the final 2 fights are definitely worth waiting around for. First up is some Japanese wrestler vs Chen Kuan Tai. The Japanese guy is ripped and he smashes everything in sight and throws Kuan Tai's stunt double around like a rag doll. Amazing stuff. The final fight is also good. Nice and long. i love that monkey-birdlike style Kurata uses. Rating- 3/5

swordsman's Adventure- lots of good fights with Adam Cheng in this one. Ching Siu Tung does the action so expect lots of spinning through the air. The final fight is pretty good, and alan Hsu has a good fight. Chang Shan has the highlight fight. I was a bit disappointed with Jack Long's main fight. 3/5

No Guilty- this one starts off promising. David Lam Wei plays a cop and so does Alexander Lo Rei. Chang Shan does a great job playing the crazy mob boss rapist. The story starts out good, but the dialogue is terrible and the movie drags for most of the running time. Finally at the end Chang shan gets to throw down. The final fight is pretty good. The biggest disappointment is that the only fighting Lo Rei does is with Chang shan, and it lasts for about 2 seconds. 2.5/5

Crazy Girl Killers- I enjoyed this, but I was really mad that Chang Shan doesn't get to fight until the end, and it isn't a very good fight. Lo rei has a few fights. Nothing special, but it's always nice to see him in action. There are a lot of gun fights which are ok. 2.5/5

Vampire Kid- really stupid kids movie with some awesome fights with Chang Shan. Jack Long also gets a couple good fights. 3/5

The Revenger- Ti Lung is great in this, just like he always is. Story is decent. Movie probably would have been better if Wong ching wasn't the main villain. I like Wong Ching, but it would have been better if someone like Chan Wai Man was the main villain and Wong Ching played his henchman (like in The Heroes). 2.5/5

Black and White swordsman- boring story, decent fights, and some of the locations where the fights take place are really cool. 2/5

Magnum fist- Other than the opening fight and the long one vs many samurai fight, this movie is crap. 1.5/5

Iron Fisted Monk- good, just not as good as Sammo's masterpieces like Prodigal son, Knockabout, The Victim and Warriors Two. Yen shi Kwan is one of my favorite actors so it was nice to see him get a lot of action. I was a bit disappointed that Chen Sing doesn't get to show off his handwork too much. 3.5/5

Foul Hero- best scene is at the start where Chen Kuan Tai fights a bunch of people. Gets really boing from there. Ku Feng has a very small role. Only reason I kept watching is because one guy looks a lot like Rongguang Yu. At first I thought for sure it was him, but by the end of the movie I was convinced it wasn't. Probably because his fighting skills suck. 1.5/5

Super Kung Fu fighter- This was a tough watch. The fights ar decent at best. Carter Wong looks bad. Story is tired as can be. Overall just a bad movie. 1/5

Shaolin Kids- this must have been written by a ten year old. Maybe it was just the English dub, but I was bored by this movie more and more as it went along. carter Wong looking cool with a beard is the best thing about this movie. The fights are good at times, but whenever a fight starts to get good, cliff Lok does this stupid thing where he jumps over a guy's back and kills him. I hated this movie. with all the big stars on hand, I expected a lot more. 1./5

Boxer's adventure- just watched this after not seeign it for 2 or 3 years. Just as good as I remember. Definitely my favorite role of Blacky Ko's career. Meng Fei, Jack Long, Dorian Tan and Lung Tien Sheng are also great. The final fight is a bit disappointing, but overall it is a really good movie. Probably the best thing about the movie is that the crash DVD is good quality and the english dub is one of the best I have ever heard. "You're dead? You die easy!" 4/5

DUEL - Spielbergs first film. Pretty good. Could have done without Dennis Weavers inner monologue, but I guess it was necessary.

THRASHIN - 80's skater movie. Sun, fun, shredding, cool moves... i miss the 80's!

THE FOG - Carpenters original. Pretty fun and cheesy 80's horror. And I like Adrienne Barbeaus jugs!

BLOODY BROTHERHOOD - pretty pedestrian triad flick, set in the 60's or something. I expected more from Andy Lau, Chan Wai Man.... and Wang Lung Wei in the directors chair!

NEW KIDS IN TOWN - dissapointing Lau Kar Leung flick. Some of the fights were cool though.

LETHAL PANTHER - another low budget Philip ko philipino flick with Yukari Oshima. A few good fights.

PEOPLES HERO - the HK version of DOG DAY AFTERNOON I suppose. Ti Lung was great in this. Didn't have much action, it was all tension. good movie.

TIGER ON BEAT 2 - I should have listened when everyone said this was crap... cuz it is. at least I got to see Conan Lee break his angle.

TO LIVE AND DIE IN TSIM SHA TSUI - confusing triad flick, with Jacky Cheung and Roy Cheung. I didn't get the story at all, but i was half asleep through the whole thing, so maybe thats why!

THE TIGERS - boring cop/triad flick with Andy Lau, Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Leung Kar Yan. Didn't do it for me!

Watched Bruce Lee Deadly Kung FU last night. I actually bought this a while ago used and never watched it. Some excellent fights and and costumes. Story was not that good, rival schools in San Fransico fighting each other. I guess it was loosely based on Bruce's life. Carter Wong and Hwang Jang Lee(in a cape) make noteworthy appearances.

I tried to watch "The Face Behind the Mask" last night, got about 40 mins in, but my disc was fucked. Unfortunately it was scratched and its past any return date so i'll have to buy another one.

So, to cool myself off and satiate my kung fu appetite I watched "Invincible Armor" and the ultra-goofy "Karate Inferno" <made my nifty avatar from the latter too.

Managed to get a copy of the Liu Yung-directed Baroness(2000). Unfortunately, despite the presence of Chin Ka-lok and Anthony Wong, the movie failed for me as Anthony Liu Yung's inexperience as a director was too obvious in his handling of the action sequences. He was also too old to be the star.

I saw Kamikaze Girls. I loved the unlikely duo of Anna Tsuchiya and Kyoko Fukuda. I found to be a wacky and funny comedy with pachinko parlors, funny looking Yakuza, and even a funny ad for a store that looks like a commerical for the store!!! (Hence my avatar). A fun film to enjoy!!!!

I finished watching Ran last night. Pretty sweet. I don't watch lots of Japanese stuff, but this one was good. Has anyone else watched this? What do you think?

In lieu of the unexpected level of violence in THE CASINO (1972), I began watching VENGEANCE IS A GOLDEN BLADE (1969) and it's possibly Ho Meng Hua's classiest film. Not quite finished with it but I can't see the final 15 minutes ruining the first 70.

Yeah, Venoms5, what do you think about The Casino? That ending took me for a loop also!:D Leave it to old Han Man to put a damper on things. Did anyone include him on best villains of all time list?

I posted a review this morning for this surprise flick. It should be the first one on the review page. Great movie all around. All the villains were right cruel.

Sha po lang - full of cliches (but I actually liked how they were used here) and I guess the story may benefit from a little touching up and polishing - or rewriting maybe...;-) Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the movie... Loved the fights, the finale - and the variation on "death incarnate in white" was really impressive.

Good stuff - and Sammo Hung totally rocked.

watched ANGRY RANGER (1990) VCD over the weekend. It was ok and had some right vicious violence in it. The films pedigree is most interesting. Wang Lung Wei directs while Jacky Chan produces (!) and his JC Action Team provide the choreography. Quite a stable of Shaw Brothers stars and supporting players make up the cast. Sun Chien plays the sadistic villain as well as the films AD. It's so funny with all the vicious gang violence going on in the movie and the main hero driving cars into the ocean and destroying clubs using the villains as rag dolls that cops are almost non existent. Oh well, guess it's no different than the unlimited ammo in John Woo and other gun fu movies.

Finished watching Police Story (DD) for the first time tonight. I would have to rate the overall film a 3.5 out of 5. I guess I just was expecting a really great film, but was left with a so-so feeling. This film has been so hyped up that I was expecting greatness. I suppose I really prefer Jackie in period MA films. The one thing that really surprised me was the bad picture quality. Fortune Star usually does a really nice job with their other films that are in my collection. I am also surprised that DD did not seek a better quality (restored and memastered) copy of this film. The extras on this release were good though.

Magnificent Natural Fist - Elton Chong and Mark Wong in a pretty batty old school flick. Despite the fact every fight is undercranked throughout, it's actually an enjoyable flick. Some very powerful displays on...well...display. 6.5/10

This Is England - I've eagerly anticipated watching this much talked about Brit-flick. To be honest, I was somewhat disappointed. It's powerful, the actors are incredible but there just seemed to be no closure. When the movie seemed to be escalating it was cut off and left to dwindle to a very "Oh" finish. 6/10

BLADE OF FURY is one I've wanted to see for a long, long time!:D I heard it's very reminiscent of the Shaw Brothers style of production.

Milkyway, where did you get Dangerous Encounter 1st Kind? I've been looking for it for years! I fell asleep during Duel of the Ultimate Weapons last night. Looking pretty good, Hwang Jang Lee on form and some hilarious dubbing. Otherwise just watched Rebel Intruders. I thought it was good loadsa fighting, a good plot and all the venoms used well. However I thought the action was a bit slow and over-choreographed at times, and some poor use of slow motion. What did anyone else thi9nk of this one?

Cheers Milkyway, I will get it as soon as possible. Just watched Duel with the Devils pretty cheesy and silly, but great action from Angela Mao and the man Tan Tao Liang. Watch out for the yo yo fight, sweet!

Shanghai Grand - 8/10 - The story begins with members of the Taiwan People's League (a revolutionary movement) being held as prisoners on a boat by a cruel woman (Almen Wong) who has been instructed to find a man named Hui Man Keung among them. The woman immediately suspect a man (Leslie Cheung) for being Keung and bringing him out and is set to execute him, but the storm ables him to get free and fight off the woman and her henchmen and eventually escaping by sea. The story then continues with a poor named Ding Lik (Andy Lau) wondering around the streets of Shanghai before finding Keung beside the seaview sleeping and having the flu that Lik takes care of. In the mean time while carrying his usual doings around the streets, he bumps into a woman named Fung Ching Ching (Ning Jing), also known as the daughter to famous crime boss Fung King Yiu (Wu Hsing-Guo), offering her to see the movies with him but getting into trouble when he rescues her from a kidnapping attempt by another famous crime boss. That later leads to Lik facing more problems when the very same crime boss burns his family's house, which almost killed Lik's mother but was saved by Keung at the very last minute, and putting his own life at stake when he and Keung visits the crime boss to show respect. But fortunately for them the situation ends with the two of them fighting off his men and finally killing the crime boss, taking over the business with Fung getting his back and rising through the ranks as new crime bosses as well as promising each other to give each other their backs and share their wealths to one another. But unexpected events will, however, break their promise and boundary that were made, resulting a huge conflict with each other.

I liked how the story was set in 1930s China (1935 to be exact) and developed its' characters and so on in that time/environment, not to mention that the sets and cinematography were all used greatly and made it so spot on and authentic. I haven't seen many HK movies that take place in China during the 1930s using crime and gangster movie elements and this is such a movie that looks and feel like it's doing just that which is impressive, even if it's obvious that the movie's influence mainly comes from US gangster/crime movies (The Untouchables, old gangster movies from the 30/40s etc) and obviously HK TVB series The Bund (starring Chow Yun-Fat and Ray Lui as the main characters of this movie), because it's actually a remake of it. Acting performances were great from every key actor in the movie: Leslie Cheung (the real star of the movie) looks to have been more edged out and hardened during this time in acting (1996) which shows and is something that I guess grows out in actors with less acting experience later on, which is good. Andy Lau is no exception either, doing a wonderful performance as a man who takes his responsibility serious when he has to... even when comes to complications and personal things. I normally don't expect HK actresses to strike on and hold their on against better and more focused players but here I thought the director (directed by Poon Man-Kit) and the producers (Tsui Hark was one of them) were doing a great job letting an actress show what she's made of, in this case in actress Ning Jing as the daughter to one of Shanghai's most notorious crime bosses having complications in her life when she loves one of them and despises the other one. Hats off for going away from stereotypes and just acting out the best from herself! Credit also goes to Amanda Lee (Ching Ching's friend), Wu Hsiao-Guo (King Yiu the crime boss and daughter to Ching Ching), Lau Shun (King Yiu's sidekick), Almen Wong (King Yiu's other sidekick) for giving the movie support and good enough performances as well as for Poon Man-Kit's great direction and Tsui Hark's flawless production, making Shanghai Grand a great movie overall.

Recommended!

I remember that Andy Lau has a really cool knife fight in this movie. It felt pretty real.
