Fantastic 4 - 8/10 - typical marvel movie about characters who are first explored, exposed with superpowers and logics behind what those powers could lead to and so on... but I enjoyed it! some effects were cheap but overall it works and each power was stunning. And Alba is irresistible.

Fantastic 4: Rise Of The Silver Surfer - 8/10 - for a sequel, it was highly fun, in fact too much fun because there were more humor than previously plus there's alot happening which kept the movie going. somehow this reminds me of other sequels to superhero movies (such as Spiderman ones, the old Superman one etc) of how relationships develops from the now familiar characters. again, I'm just poiting this out as a good thing (though a lil bit of a change could be done every now and then perhaps) so overall the movie was good.

Gaslight (1940)

Original Brit version. Not bad at all though I still prefer Ingrid in '44.

Casino Royale

I tried. I really did. Sorry Craig - you're no Bond. Bring back Brosnan (puh-leasee)

Dragon's Claws

Good stuf here

The Black Hole (1979)

Disney on dust. Crazy lil film but had its moments. Love Ol' B.O.B. the robot!

Babel

Slow paced film. Decent - but could have been better.

I Confess

Solid but lesser known Hitch flick from the 50s. Montgomery Clift sure does look like Cruise.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - 7/10 - this one was a bit painful to watch, ran too long which was enough to play with my patience. otherwise quite good: with decent action and allround solid performances from everyone (Deep stealing the spotlight from an acting standpoint).

Some more SB's: Warning Possible Spoilers ahead!!!

Shaolin Rescuers Ahhhhhh that was tasty - A nice payoff for years of the degraded home video versions... In my personal 'top 10 SB Martial Arts films' list.

The Pirate With Ti Lung and David Chiang... This seemed kind of disjointed in the storytelling IMO - but it was entertaining nonetheless.

Torrent of Desire Hmn, have to agree with this guy on hkflix' site:

'Torrent of Desire' (1969) is a flawed, dated, yet solid and occasionally gripping melodrama from director Lo Chen
I guess the only things I could add are: When the melodrama isn't "gripping", it's annoying as hell, featuring lots of plot holes - also the cover blurb, like other Celestial overkill blurbs - doesn't describe the film within very accurately.

And then we have some newer Japanese films:

Bubble Fiction: Boom or Bust aka Baburu he Go!! Taimu Mashin ha Doramu Shiki It's another recent Japanese comedy/Sci-Fi film featuring antics with time travel... Not bad for fluff, but not nearly as engaging and convoluted as Summer Time Machine Blues, which I heartily recommend to everyone.

The Matsugane Potshot Affair (By the director of Linda Linda Linda & Cream Lemon, Nobuhiro Yamashita...) Very similar in tone to 'Fargo', and apparently comparable to some of David Lynch's films, somehow, it moves at a pretty slow pace and has very little "action" - but the subtle black comedy more than makes up for it. It's also a bit longish at 112 min...

I watched Blades of Glory with John Heder and Will Ferell, i'd give it a 8/10, i though it was really good, because i liked Anchorman and Oldschool so it was cool as well to see John Heder.

Life Gamble- 2/10, Venoms and Lee I Min should be totally awesome, but this was boring and slow.

My Young Auntie-10/10, loved this Lau Kar Leung masterpiece! Hsiao Ho is one of my new faviroutes!

Kid With the Goledn Arm-8/10, love the Dun Chien and Philip Kwok kicking fiExtras serries 2- 8/10, This wasn't as good as the first series IMO, but the epidsode with Orlando Bloom was really good!

I've been watching a mixture of movies lately, however the good old martial arts movies are also present:

Once upon a time in China trilogy - Jet Li in one of his best performances, especially in the second part where his fights with Donnie Yen are absolutely fantastic. 10/10

Transformers - a really good comic/animation series transfer to the big screen, good fun and not too childish. 9/10

3:10 to Yuma - starring Christian Bale and Russel Crow in a intriguing western set after the Civil war in America, good development of the characters and overall a nice attempt to revitalize the forgotten genre of lone heroes and baddies fighting against one another. 8/10

Die Hard 4.0 - another sequel to a favorite action series, Bruce Willis is back with his wiseguy talks and stunts on a greater scale. 9/10

War - I'm pretty dissapointed with this action piece featuring Jason Statham and Jet LI, the same happened with "The One" - there was a potential in both movies, sadly the execution was on a lower scale. 4/10

Shoot 'em up - a new movie with Clive Owen, Monica Bellucci and Paul Giamatti - lots of fun and bullets in the style of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith". 8/10

Invisible Target - a very good movie with many broken glasses and windows, stunts overload, nicely staged fights, and some fresh faces to spice up the HK action movie industry. 9/10

Flash Point - the latest movie by Donnie Yen is not to be miss, charisma, fast fights, ruthless bad guys, and energizing good guy. 9/10

A few movies which are from old ages, but I continue to watch them again and again:

Iron Monkey - Donnie Yen kicks ass as Wong Kei Ying. 9/10

Project A - all time favorite brought by Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, a must see - I hope these three collaborate again. 10/10

Ninja in the Dragon's Den - a great ninja vs. kung fu clash by director Yuen Woo Ping. 10/10

The Tai-chi Master - Jet Li shows his talents again in this great film starring Michelle Yeoh also. 9/10

And many more also, but I won't have enough space :)

Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End - 7.5/10 - once again too long and with the usual story and character-development, but with MORE action (especially in the end). Chow Yun Fat was the best actor in the whole movie and it was nice to see him in all his scenes, but overall wasted (would've been nice to have him fight at the end, considering that his crew were alive and fought at the end).

I finally saw two films that I've heard a shitload about, but for some reason never got around to seeing.

The first one is Tetsuo:The Iron Man. This is one of the few movies I can say that I've seen literally nothing like it before. Ever. I'm not even going to try to describe it, then again, a lot of you probably have seen it already.

The other is A Moment of Romance, and I really enjoyed it. I'm kind of a sucker for cheesy romantic triad movies.

From Beijing With Love - 6/10 - to be frank, I was expecting alot of humor and ended up quite bored watching it. Chow has some great moments but doesn't get to do anything else that's interesting. villains were ok and so was the action but overall the movie was a disappointment.

The Departed - 9/10 - I must say I'm impressed. being a remake to Infernal Affairs, I thought things could go worse but Scorsese really did a great job on two things: changing some major plot parts for the concept and executing it differently. I, for one, don't normally show much interest in remakes nor do these useless comparisons but knowing the style of both movies, playing with the same idea despite differences in some ways, The Departed was somehow absurd in some places here in there, mainly the addition of Mark Wahlberg as the cocky, sarcastic pain-in-the-ass cop. seemed like an easy excuse to develop a tragic end for the main characters: one dying at the hands of another rat (a bit of change here as it involves more characters) and the other getting murdered unexpectly. At least in Infernal Affairs trilogy, the fate of the surviving rat was expanded, beginning with a back story and a future story after the case, explaining things more clearly (but since Scorsese's is making sequels it might do justice). guess that's a sign of nit-picking but since I'm speaking from a remake/gentle comparison standpoint, guess it might be good bringing it up anyway. aside this, I'm overall very satisfied with Scorsese's direction and the acting performances from everyone (especially DiCaprio who has become much better as an actor). recommended!

Spider Man 3- Not bad, but not great either. It seemed like they were trying to stuff too many things into one film, causing it to be a little disjointed at times.

The Deadly Breaking Sword- Shaw Brothers wuxia movie directed by Sun Chung and starring Ti Lung and Fu Sheng. It kind of dragged here and there with comedy that mostly wasn't funny; but overall pretty good.

Black Sun- The phrase "jaw-dropping" gets thrown around a lot. But this movie left my mouth hanging wide open for basically the whole running time. It's about an infamous massacre that took place when Japanese soldiers invaded Nanking in China during World War 2. The violence and brutality in this film must be seen to be believed.

Hero - 7/10 - quite good movie about poor Takeshi Kaneshiro and Yuen Wah traveling to Shanghai, where they meet gangboss Biao who controls it and fights to save it from rival Yuen Yak. cinematography was top-notch, just like Shanghai Affairs, with lots of nature and studio sets to give the movie a cosy feel and the music (sounded classical rather than modern) adding alot more to that. in terms of acting this is without a doubt one of Biao's best ever (the only good actor in the movie), he came off looking energic and convincing in all his acting scenes which made the movie alot more powerful! shame he had to be accompanied by the rest who didn't strike as hard as he did (even Kaneshiro wasn't that interesting even though his character became a gangster later on). now the fighting... not great at all but still ok: fast editing and usual Corey Yuen tricks (not my thing) that overall interests but disappoints. Yuen Tak makes a good villain but his fight with Biao at the end left more to desire choreography-wise, plus the editing and awful undercranking brought it down a whole lot making it less interesting. overall, it could've been alot better (the movie had a very fast pace which makes me think ALOT of footage had to go out because the production seemed too rushed) but Biao's excellent acting makes up it.

Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) - IMO it was worth the time, ONCE. Too much clowning around, not enough action or drama...

Happiness of the Katakuris (2001) - I don't understand what people like in this, but then again I have that problem with much of Miike's output. There are many other films in a similar 'black comedy' vein from Japan that are much better. The comedy was flat, the musical bits were awful and plain uninspired.

Two from the "A Century of Japanese Cinema" dvd series released by Panorama:

The Incident (1978) - A somewhat subdued 'whodunit' by director Nomura Yoshitaro, who also did the far more interesting (IMO) film called

The Castle Of Sand (1974) - "Two detectives investigate the murder of a 60-year-old policeman. The victim is well-liked, and there does not seem to be any motive for the murder. The investigation finally leads to the discovery of the hidden past of a young rising composer."

Also subdued, this one has a lot of unexpected twists and turns to keep you guessing.

Bloody Territories (1969) - Old School Yakuza film that didn't get off the ground, it seemed very thin and 'by-the-numbers' even for Yakuza Eiga.

Tora-San, The Intellectual (#16, 1975), Tora-San's Sunrise and Sunset (#17, 1976) and Tora-San's Heart of Gold (#18, 1976) Don't ask me why I like Tora-San, I am just glad I found this series, it makes me very happy when I watch it, and I hope to see them all.

Girl Boss Blues: Queen Bee's Counterattack (1971) - heh: features the memorably infamous sex-on-a-motorcycle-last-one-to-come-wins race oh, they weren't making films like this in the usa in the early 70's, that's fer sure.

ok, we're getting a bit lopsided towards Japan, so here's some recently watched HK's...

Eagle Shooting Heroes (1993) - The film many love to hate, it's SO over the top HK fantasy Wuxia. Shot at the same time with much of the same cast and crew, this totally redeems it's 'sister' movie 'Ashes of Time'. It was also a pleasure to see the Japanese DVD version, it looks a lot better than the Universe release...

The Sting II (1993) - Decent comedy with Andy Lau and Tony Leung

The Thirty Million Rush (1987) - Pretty funny 80's comedy with Karl Maka, Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia & Liu Chia-Liang...

Brigitte Lin as a kickass Nun? It's another Cinema City & Films Co. production so there's slapstick a-plenty.

Ghost Lantern (1993) - Another in a long line of early 90's Ghost films: Andrew Lau directing, Tony Leung in the lead with Chingmy Yau co-starring, it was decent enough but wasn't that inspired.

I've been going through the new Kubrick boxset, they did a tremendous job with the mastering. The colors look absolutely amazing. Highly recommended, classic stuff

I've been getting into One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest lately, great movie starring Jack Nicholson if you don't know (kinda scary if you haven't though ).

Since I work at a movie theater, just saw Beowulf for free, it had some of the most amazing visuals (some of which include a topless, nipples and all, CG Angelina Jolie that strangely arouses!) along with American Gangster, amazing movie with a great performance by Denzel. He's the man!

By the way, if you plan on going to the theater as we near Black Friday (that's gonna be a killer week, oh god!), a couple you should avoid: Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, I don't know why you'd go anyway! Avoid Fred Claus, you may enjoy the performances by Vince Vaughn and Paul Giamatti, but the story and writing are atrocious!

Born To Fight - 6/10 - had quite some expectations for this one but ended up being disappointed. Dan Chupong (who has a good individual style himself) and the other action participants were good with their thing (painful stuntwork, real impact when hitting people, tricks etc) but like other Thai MA movies I've seen so far there's no real choreography nor real dangers for the fighting leads, just them taking out enemies with single powerful attacks without having much problem at all. shame. as for the story, it was ok and touching here and there but nothing special. overall decent for being a different thai MA movie but the story and the fighting were poorly developed imo.

300- not bad. Amazed that they weren't roided up to look that buff.

The Lives of Others- German film about 1980's East Berlin, spying, and personal relationships. Pretty good.

Breach- ok, Chris Cooper is really good in it.

Hellsing OVA part 1- not as good as the series but still good anime.

Planet Earth series- the best thing you'll ever see about nature. Get it!!
