Really enjoyed this when it first came out, it caused a bit if sensation at the time. I was about 17/18 and loved the black humour, gore and the fact it was set in Scotland. It's not aged very well, and the FX were hokey even at the time. It was a tiny budget movie, that did pretty well theatrically against bigger budget flicks. The director Neil Marhsall went on to do one of my favourite horrors of all time The Descent(2005). Never sat through any of its sequels though. The only thing that really stick in my memory is the opening scenes. Wasnt Gabrielle Byrne in this one too?. The film revolves around a former TV station that becomes a house of horrors when a group of college-age kids go in as the dad of one of them has bought it and plans to turn in into condos. The TV show shot there, a 1960s era children's show called the Handy Dandy and Mr. Jolly Show, was also a crime scene with supposed child killings that ended when Mr. Jolly committed suicide. However, Jolly isn't dead but is actually a black magic wizard hellbent on revenge and brings to life Handy Dandy and his puppets to begin killing the kids one by one. It can be more seen as a homage to the slasher/ghost movies with the typical characters and kills. Bill Oberst Jr. is great as Mr. Jolly and Bill "Chop-Top/Otis" Moseley makes the most of his screen time as the father of one of the kids, who has a more hidden agenda in buying the building. Rather exceptional in the genre. Terror Train (USA, 1980) [VoD] – 1.5/5 Regrettably dull graduation party / revenge slasher with Jamie Lee Curtis, only in a train this time. David Copperfield plays a magician! Sort of works for the 1st hour, then you realize you really don’t give a shit. Pedestrian on the technical level as well. Sleepless (Italy, 2001) [DVD] - 1/5 Argento returned to giallo... with this piece of shit. Ugly, completely nonsensical and with atrocious English voice acting. Goblin did the music but you'd never guess it. Max Von Sydow is the only good thing about the film. You feel sorry for him being in this. Summer of 84 (Canada, 2018) [VoD] - 4/5 Four 15 year olds begin suspecting their neighbor is a serial killer. It’s a shame since the “Satan worshipping hippies” story context has its moments, the score is nice, and there are visual sequences that work. But Martino has done much better films, like Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972). Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (Italy, 1972) [BD] – 3.5/5 A marriage drama on acid, gone giallo. Captivating, beautifully filmed, with great score and terrific lead performances by Luigi Pistilli as a violent husband and Anita Strindberg (absolutely stunning) as the suffering wife. The plot could do without some of the Poe / Black Cat stuff that feels a bit shabby, as do some other plot developments towards the end. Torso (Italy, 1973) [BD] - 3/5 A slightly uninvolving giallo with exceptional amounts of nudity, turns into a fantastic slasher/thriller during its final third. Worth seeing for the last 30 minutes. Once Upon a Time in the West (Italy / USA, 1969) [DCP] - 5/5 Leone's grand epic and finest picture, an endlessly inspiring piece of filmmaking and the one film where men are allowed to cry. There was a 35mm screening in Finland some years ago, but me being in Japan I had to settle for a DCP celebrating the film's 50th anniversary. It was the latest in a series of nationwide theatrical re-release in Japan, following Dawn of the Dead and Blade Runner this year, The Thing, Sorcerer, Last Tango in Paris and a few others last year. I guess they tried to get a piece of the Marvel / DC cake. Even the action scenes are boring, minus a slightly inventive vehicle bit near the end. Some nice laughs from Johnson and Statham picking fun of each other is the only positive. Also, the film mostly does away with the elements that seem to have made the series so popular: the car porn and the multicultural family / friendship bonding soap opera. Angel Has Fallen (USA, 2019) [Flight] – 3/5 A smaller, slightly less outrageous but still entertaining entry in the Fallen series which has got to be the most bone-headed, honest 80s / 90s esque action franchise out there today. But once it gets going, it really gets going. A wonderful puzzle of a series and one you might not be able to put together until it allows you. Episode 6 may be my favorite episode of television ever. Glass - A good attempt by M. Night but one that ultimately doesn't work. It plods along and, even once it gets to its "big finale," it doesn't accomplish much. A distinctly mediocre effort if ever I saw one. Rambo: Last Blood - Call me a Neanderthal but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Not very Rambo-y and the first half moves a little slow, but once it devolves into ultra-violence, I was along for the ride. Good stuff. The trailer sounded interesting but I didn't see this one in the end. I'm a bit surprised, the movie came across as a rather fun venture - the departure from the main series' car show feel in favor of something that looked like an action comedy with The Rock and Jason Statham having to team up against a common foe seemed promising. I recall the main plot was interlaced with a lot of background elements on the original team and how superheroes became a thing in this universe. Or is it a more creative story loosely based on the property ? re Glass: I believe it was an attempt by M. Night at making an extended universe using the characters from Unbreakable and Split and putting them together IIRC. I find the idea interesting, but rather clichee nowadays (Samuel L. Jackson pits Bruce Willis and the guy from Split against each other and they work like Luthor/Supes/Batman in Daw of Justice, right ?) when next to every movie is part of a big franchise, if not a whole universe covering countless different titles. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
