Bohemian Rhapsody [Bryan Singer, 2018]: This is actually a really good film about the formation of the band Queen and their high rise to fame up to their mindblowing 1985 Live Aid performance. Rami Malek was great as Freddie Mercury. I actually envisioned him as a Dr. Frank N Furter as he looks to have a bit of a resemblance to Tim Curry. Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, and Joe Mazzello were perfectly cast as Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon. The film not only involved Queen but Freddie's personal relationship with Mary Austin, who would become "the love of his life" until his death in 1991 while his sexuality was explored. A great film about a legendary band.

The Maze Runner [Wes Ball, 2014]: The film that broke Dylan O'Brien from his role as Stiles in the Teen Wolf reboot as he plays Thomas, a young man who mysteriously awakens in a place called The Glade and may be the key to finding the way out. Based on the hit YA novel by James Dashner, there were great performances from Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Will Poulter.

The Scorch Trials [Wes Ball, 2015]: Picking up where The Maze Runner left off, Thomas leads the rest of the escaped Gladers to the now demolished world (a result of the sun causing the Scorch and a virus that infects people, who become known as the Flares), where they plan to find a resistance army called the Right Arm to stop WCKD, the organization responsible for the Maze.

The Death Cure [Wes Ball, 2017]: Originally meant to have come out in 2016, the film would be known as the film that lead actor Dylan O'Brien was killed in during a car stunt gone awry. Howeer, during his recovery, he managed to shoot American Assassin before going back to work on the final installment of the trilogy, where he attempts to rescue longtime friend and fellow Glader Minho, who's been kidnapped by WCKD thanks to the treachery of Teresa and put an end to WCKD once and for all. This one is a worthy finale thanks to some very surprising twists in the story.

Masters of the Universe [Gary Goddard, 1987]: I re-visited this one and I still have a soft spot for it. It seemed more for teens than kids, but hell, you gotta love Frank Langella as Skeletor and I did think Dolph Lundgren made a pretty decent He-Man. Now this just makes me want to know what's in store for the in-development reboot with the Nee Brothers directing and the story being more faithful to the original cartoon (Prince Adam and BattleKat are confirmed to be in it).

sniper - ultimate kill. Our sharpshooter is in colombia helping DEA to arrest crimelord who has in his sleeve corrupt official and other sniper...It`s still not quality of original sniper movies but I liked this more than 2 parts made before this. Tom Berenger again makes appearance in small talk only role. Lots of action and story does it`s purpose, not necessary revisit material but far from boring.

finished legends of tomorrow season 3. as mentioned in post earlier felt humor been added but have to say I was stunned when legends summoned ultimate warrior in finale...was waiting some graceful troop but turned out to be furry toy. And cliffhanger was so cheap shot quite sure not going for season 4. Crisis on earth-x were great episodes but thats all...

The Graduate(1967) - Director Mike Nichols, won an Oscar for Best Director, for this now well told tale. A young man Ben Braddock(Dustin Hoffman) start's an affair, with the much older, more experienced, seductive, and manipulative, Mrs Robinson(Anne Bankroft). With a some superb acoustic/vocal harmonies, from 60's musicians, Simon & Garthfunkel. Providing a solid and very hip for the time, soundtrack. In the context of todays morals and moods, a predatory female, chasing and seducing a young man, is certainly not a common theme in contemporary Hollywood. In today’s world, would Hoffman’s character, be claiming he was sexually harassed?.

It has been over a good decade since I watched this film, when I wasn’t far off the age of the Hoffmans character. Watching it now, I've noticed so many different little details I missed the first-time round. Such as the scene when Ben's Mum confronts him about his late-night activities. It's clear they’ve dressed up his mum, to look very much like Mrs Robinson, right down to the hair style. The frat house for homosexual men, and how Ben get's kicked out when they discover he's straight. Look out for a young Richard Dreyfuss, in an early role, during these scenes. A film, of this age, is going to look dated, especially in the tech saturated society, we live in today. I doubt this affair could have gone so far, if people had camera phones back then. Yet it still remains what it is, a great piece of film making, done with its own atmosphere and identity.

There's plenty of good performances, but its Anne Bankroft and Hoffman, who hold it all together. The excellent Bankroft, conveys so much, just with her eyes and facial expression's alone. One very good example of this, is when she's sat staring at the T.V, flicking her cigarette ash nonchalantly into an ashtray. With a look in her eyes, that says a lot more than any words can do. When Ben comes over to take out her daughter Elaine(Katherine Ross). Another stand out scene, see's Ben fending of a horde of old wedding guests, with the use of a gold crucifix. Which is also a cool nod to the horror genre.

Here's a couple of random facts about the film, to close this short write-up. Despite the age gap in the film being much bigger, the two leads were only six years apart in age. Hoffman looked younger than he was, and she was made up to look older, than she was. Director Nichol's, turned down Robert Redford, who auditioned for the role of Ben.

The 6th Annual Live On Cinema Oscar Special

This is based off the Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington satirical movie review show. Oscar specials are hosted around the time of new oscars. All free on youtube.

This has been a favorite show of mine and I was really surprised to see this pop up on youtube as there werent any movie review episodes this year, I figured the show/concept was just over with. Although Id have to say I prefer the show over the Oscar Specials, but both are great! 

Highlights of the show were the one man bronzeman, Mark 'the living oscar'. And the hilarious and surprisingly impressive (in a punk-tinged way at least) cover of Bohemian Rhapsody by Tim and his band near the end!

The better, shorter cut. Tremendously entertaining despite the far stretched plot.

Rome Armed to the Teeth (Italy, 1976) [DVD] - 2/5
Over-rated Italo crime with an admittedly kick ass score. Merli is good as a hard fisted cop, but the script and Lenzi’s direction are strangely void of highlights.

Suspiria (Italy, 1977) [BD] - 4.5/5
Synapse's 4.0 sounds incredible, but I still think the voice acting on the Italian dub is vastly better.

Conan the Barbarian (USA, 1982) [BD] - 4.5/5
Majestic adventure. The score is capable of inspiring the only YouTube comments worth reading. "I'm a woman, and I just grew balls listening to this." "I'm black but when I hear this I all of a sudden have an Austrian accent." "Man need no Viagra, Man have Conan music."

Hard Ticket to Hawaii (USA, 1987) [DVD] – 3/5
Ridge Forrester goes against drug dealers in a worthy, but cinematically even more inept trash companion for Samurai Cop and Miami Connection. The action is alright, but the acting and storytelling even worse, more DTV-like than in the fore-mentioned films, and a bit too tong in the cheek as well. The film is mainly cast with Playboy playmates who do a topless scene every 10 minutes or so, and steal too much screen time from the accidentally wonderful Ronn Moss of The Bold and The Beautiful who does karate, had loud sex, kills people in incredible ways (with a couple of downright insane kills), and is just amusing and beautiful to no end. It’s a real shame he didn’t pursue a parallel career in porny b-action films like this because that would’ve been cool beyond belief!

Post-modern post-apocalypse with the world's most irritating female side-kick is worth enduring for its super fun splatter effects.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (Denmark, 2013) [Netflix] – 2/5
Nymphomaniac: Vol. II Denmark, 2013) [Netflix] – 1.5/5
Overlong and oftentimes boring, but Stellan Skarsgård is fabulous and really funny as well. Vol. 1 is the better of the two; Vol. 2 misses much of the humour though there are some good actors (Mia Goth, Willem Dafoe). Watching the Japanese versions turned out a great choice as the optical censorship saved me from the parts I didn't care to see in the first place.

Hacksaw Ridge (AU/USA, 2016) [Netflix] - 3/5
Gibson's prequel to Passion of the Christ.

NIGHTMARE SISTERS  - I guess all of us have seen at least 1 movie where college guys are after girls. This is such with some exorcism added. I swear in every other college movies actors look like oscar winners compared to bad actors in this, guys are either over the top irrating wimps or bad overacting studs, and women do not get praise either. There is no gore at all, victims literally disappear like smoke in the air. f/x consits few beams and one demon which appears at very end. So bad movie it`s not even fun. One worst movies ever made for sure.

MURDER WEAPON - Very bad horror movie where most of the time absolutely nothing happens and no tension. It has some kills tho and overall it`s not as bad torture to watch as Sisters tho.

DEADLY EMBRACE - And yet again weak movie. Thriller where wealthy man wants to get rid of his wife without paying lot $. Again flick where you wait and wait and wait for something to happen but none...Well at least music is quite good but wasted here. Would have deserved better flick.

 

88 probably shopped around cheapest flicks to get this wreck released. Although got it at discount complete waste of money and time. Would throw it into trashcan but at least when take to trade can have something back.

Got in a couple of films that have been in my Netflix queue.

Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski (2018) documentary.

Stanislav Szukalski (1893-1987) was a Polish-American artist. Glenn Bray, a California art aficionado, happened upon a book of Szukalski's work when he was young, and then in 1971 discovered the artist only lived LA just a few miles away. They became friends over time, and Bray began recording the artist using Betamax video tapes, amassing about 200 hours worth of film of Szukalski setting forth his ideas and philosophy about art, culture, and history. Szukalski is almost unknown today, but in the early 20th century (pre-WW2), he was beginning to gain recognition for his talent and work. He was proud, opinionated, and thought no one knew more than he. With such a personality, he tended to grate a lot of people's nerves, and sometimes shot himself in the foot career-wise. But the man was an absolute artistic genius, and it is heartrending what he underwent while in Poland when the Nazis started bombing his village. As a sculptor, the guy is in a league with Da Vinci & Michelangelo. It's kind of sad that such a talent wasted away in virtual anonymity. 

 

Under the Skin (2013) starring Scarlett Johansson; directed by Jonathan Glazer

The movie is set in Scotland, and Johansson plays an alien being of some sort. She rides around in a van, looking for single men with no attachments whatsoever. She then lures them into a ride under the pretense of a possible sexual liaison, and takes them back to an abandoned building, where she then leads them into a vast dark room. As both she and the men strip, she walks away, and they follow, sinking into a murky dimension to never be seen again. Eventually, she begins to seemingly doubt what she's doing, and starts trying to behave in a more human manner, which does not go well.

Okay, this movie is weird, man. I like arty films. I don't remember any soundtrack to this, except whenever music is playing in the background or part of the scene. There's also no spoken dialogue for almost the first fifteen minutes, and then it's rather sparse throughout the rest of the movie. It's very moody and dark, which is fine, but nothing is ever explained. I think it's based off a book, so maybe you need to have read it in order to watch this. There are a number of disturbing moments in this, not in a graphic sense (though one scene comes close), but in the mood of the film, which to me is an asset towards excellent film-making. However, the story is just too cryptic, and when it was over, I was left thinking, "Oooooookay. That was that." I can't decide if it was a worthwhile viewing experience or not. I will say this: I do believe this is the only film in which Johansson has ever done nude scenes (yes, plural). And they're not just glimpses, and they're not erotic, which may be why she did them. According to the IMDb page for the movie, it was 10 years in the making, and she must have had very strong interest in it to remain obligated to be in it for 4 years before production started.

Still...it's a weird movie, man.

Triple Frontier - Super solid heist film with a great cast and a really enjoyable concept (when you steal more money than you can ever imagine, how do you get it from point A to point B?). I actually think this is one of the best of the year so far, for me. It’s nothing mind blowing but it’s massively enjoyable.

This is getting american release..Should I avoid it if(and likely it will be) expensive? Not huge fan of Merli either although it has Milian too and Lenzi rarely made bad movies but such things have happened...

It's a relatively popular title so don't skip it based on my opinion alone. But I thought it was a failure.

The Magnificent Seven(2016)- The 1960s Western re-make of Akira Kurosawa masterpiece Seven Samurai, directed by John Sturges, gets its own re-make. Well there's been a number over the years, re-makes/sequels, films that just borrowed the same basic idea. Did the original movie set of the future trend for gangs of hired talents, featuring multiple tars in one film?. Later in the decade we got The Professionals(1966) and The Dirty Dozen(1967), to name two big budget movies that use a similar theme/story.

When I sat down to watch the 2016 movie, directed by Antoine Fuqua, I really have any expectations. It's not a film I've read that much about from fans or critics. You were never going to top the cast of the original, which was over flowing with machismo. Here's it more rained, but that’s no bad thing, the new cast of seven heroes, don't do a bad job at all. Watching the film, some of the violence looked heavily edited?. Maybe the movie was toned down in post-production?. The fight between the two Native American warriors, looking like its being cut in places?.

Chris Pratt's hard drinking gunslinger, teams up with the stoic Chisolm, played with class and style by Denzel Washington. Byung-Hun Lee, is the master of the short blade, playing a homage to Robert Vaughns character in the original. Ethan Hawk is good as the sharpshooter, who lost his never for gun battles. Stand-out performance among the seven, has to go to Vincent D'Onofrio softly spoken, strong as ox, mountain man character Jack Horne. Martin Sensmeier, is Red Harvest, the Native American character, who looks to be a nod to Woody Stroudes role in The Professionals, both being armed with a bow. Rounding out the team, is Mexican Vasquez, brought to life by actor Manuel Garcia-Ruflo.

The iron willed Emma Cullen(Haley Bennett) is really the eigth member of the team, and also the one who hires them to protect her small town. She stands side by side with them as equal, without having to make a big song and dance about it. Replacing the gang of Mexican bandits, led by Eli Wallach in the original. Is the cold hearted greed ridden industrialist Barthlolmew Bogue(Peter Sarsgaard). I prefer Wallach in the original, but Sargaard still delivers a great performance, with what little he's given.

By no means a classic must see movie, the 2016 version still delivered an entertaining hour and thirty minute's. If you are just looking for a big budget action film, that doesn’t take itself seriously. The cast might not be up there with the original, how can to recreate that kind of entourage?. Yet I never once sat there wishing, it was Steven McQueen, Yul Bryner, James Coburn etc, playing these new roles. It's by no means Unforgiven, Tombstone or The Wild Bunch. It's not trying to be those film, itt delivers a more fun film, acton-wise. With some nice nods to the Westenr of the past.

I watched Jean Epstein's 1923 film, Cœur Fidèle, but was t largely engrossed or impressed by it. Not too sure why. (maybe a rewatch wil do sometime)

I watched this after seeing the Netflix film, Paris is Us, and then becoming interested in french impressionist cinema. I absolutely loved this movie. I just rewatched it and cant wait for a third seeing soon. It has some of the flashiest filmaking Ive seen since viewing Bangkok Dangerous (original) also quite recently.

Paris is Us is an idiosyncratic head trip dealing with different coming of age and related existential pondering. After loving this film so much and thinking about it also makes me want to revisit the similarly trippy Enter The Void movie.

I delved into some indie comedies as of late:

Finding Steve McQueen (Mark Steven Johnson, 2019): Based on the true story of the 1972 United California Bank Heist, considered the biggest bank heist in US History, this was more than a biopic about its getaway driver, Harry Barber, who had an obsession with Steve McQueen, but his ability to hide out for 8 years until he finally fesses up to his longtime girlfriend the truth about who he really is. The film has the heist, romance, and in the case of the gang, laugh out loud moments. Their constant bickering was the comic highlight of the film.

Kathryn Upside Down (Allie Loukas, 2019): A film that relies more on improvisation opposed to scripted, I enjoyed this film after having a bad morning and I couldn't stop laughing. It was about a miserable woman who at a social function for her mother and domineering stepdad gets the shock of a lifetime when the plumber she calls in to fix the toilet turns out to be the biological father she never met. Loukas did virtually everything (direct, produce, wrote, 2nd unit cinematography and star) and she is great to watch. I really enjoyed this film.

Lost & Found (Liam O Mochain, 2019): An Irish comedy-drama that involves seven stories that connect through one character, played by O Mochain himself. The stories involve O Mochain working at the lost and found at a train station, a beggar at the same train station, the proposal of our connection's best friend and his girlfriend, the grand opening of a bar that doesn't go as planned, the discovery of a childhood heirloom for our protagonist's grandmother, the beggar's funeral, and the wedding between the best friends (or is it?) Lots of laugh, some good drama, some shocking twists. O Mochain took five years to shoot the entire film in various segments during each summer.

The phenomenal Love, Death & Robots on Netflix. While some episodes can be skipped, the show is largely incredible. Action-packed, original and, at times, very beautiful. I definitely recommend this to those that enjoy a bit of really good animation.

Savage Streets (United States, 1984) dvd 4/5

Infamous American exploitation movie from the mid-80’s featuring a very young looking Linnea Quigley (she was 26 at the time) as a deaf-mute younger sister to a too-old-to-be-in-high-school Linda Blair (she was 25 at the time).

A cartoonish looking gang of four expelled teens brutally rape the younger sister and leave her for dead, while Linda Blair tries to figure out who it is.  Holding her back is a regular string of problems at school (fights in the girl's shower!) where she’s reprimanded by the slimy but tough Principal played by John Vernon (Dean Wormer from Animal House).

Eventually, she exacts her revenge on the gang, though it’s not nearly as violent or creative as everything leading up to it.

The hair, the music, the clothes, the bad acting, and even a Linda Blair nude scene highlight this American Exploitation classic that’s still entertaining and watchable.

Vigalante Force(1976) - 1970's actioner, written and directed by George Armitage(Grosse Point Blank, Hit Man). In the vain of Clint Eastwoods The Gauntlet(1977), this movie goes for the over the top action approach. Through logic out the window, because it just wont sit wel with this movie experience. When a big oil company sets up outside a small town. With the big wages, comes the big gambling dens and pop up brothel's. The town looks like to be in a constant state of un-rest, with mass brawls and crime spree's. The local sheriff just cant handle the situation. It's a fun, but certainly not a tightly directed movie. When the late Jan Micheal Vincent(Airwolf). Plays Ben Arnold, a local hard working man who gets so sick of the local thugs and holligans. He decides to bring his tough, fearless ex Vietnam soldier/brother Aaron Arnold(Kris Kristofferson) and his buddies.

This is no classic, but still worth the time of action cinema fan's. Especially if you like old school CGI free stunt-work, of which there's plenty on display here. It's the stunt team who are the real stars of this production. There's some unintentional comedy here and there, but how serious can you expect this to be?. There's more lead flying in the finale, than seen in the entire Vietnam war. There's also some stuff, which the makers of First Blood(1981), might have borrowed?. Though I know the Rambo script was kikcing around Hollywood from the early 70's.

Five for Hell(1969) - Low budget Elsio Studios World War 2 themed actioner, starring an eye twitching Klause Kinksi, John Garko and Margeret Lee. Filmed entirely on location in Italy. Directed by Gianfrnaco Parolini, credited here as Frank Kramer. John Garko(Sartana) was an established spagehtti Western star, when he made this Dirty Dozen style war fick. English actress Margeret Lee, plays the German Helger Richter. Lee spent her career being a leady lay in mostly Italian films?. Garko's plays honorable American Lt Glenn Hoffman, who puts together a unique fighting force. That doesnt consists of crminals or highly trained soliders. No instead, he drives around in his jeep picking up all the Military odbballs and non comformist's. The teams mission is to get some secret Nazi war plans, that are held up in a safe in some Itlain villa. Ony the Villas owned by one of the cruelest and most feard SS offices Col Han's Muller(Kinski). Kinski steals the film, as the sadistic chain smoking Colonel.

Recommended to fans of Itlain action cinema from the 1960's. There's no shortage of creativity and plenty of energy in the performances. They clearly didnt have much money to play with, but the cast appeared to be having a lot of fun with this one. Don't expect much in the way of Political correctness either. With the word Kraut usually yelled just before some German soldiers get machined gunned down. It's all accompanied by both and up-beat and meloncholy Italiann style soundtrack by Elsio Manucuso.

Uncle sam : Lustig satire.

Relentless: Badass thriller.

Lustig (now the founder and CEO of Blue Underground) is definitely a fantastic director.

Aquaman(2018) - James Wan directed high adventure, under, and over the seven sea's. Not to mention, a few small adventures on dryland too. A huge box-office success, it's not hard to see what attracted audiences to this movie. I don't know anything about the comic book version of the title character. However, the movie did what it was intended to do, and thats entertain. Persoanlly, I think they could have got two movies out of this one. There was a lot of stuff to digest in the just over two hour runtime. This appears to be the current Hollywood mdel, higher cinema prices, with an increase in longer runtime on major movies. Maybe it's just me, but so many major blockbuster films appear to be aiming for at least a two hour runtime?.

Jason Momoa and Amber Heard were really good, as were Yahya Abdul-ateen II, William Defoe, Dolph Lundren and Temura Morrison. Nicole Kidman has managed to break the spell of aging to quote a Red Hot Chilli Pepper's lyric. Thanks to the aid of some CGI enhancement, and they even made her look like a real ass kicker in that early scuffle. Where she uses a heavy duty Trident to defend her family with. Cool to see Graham Mctavish(Outlander) in a supporting role as King Atlan. Look forward to seeing more of Yahya Abduls Manta in the sequel, liked the old school tinge they gave his costume.

With a spectacular finale, that takes big action Hollywood set peices to another level. There's a lot to enjoy here, even if the directions a little weak at times. It's hard to be overly critical of a fun pop-corn movie like this one.

Dexter season 7 - revisit. Traded it away years ago as rarely watch series twice but as saw this in charity shop for 1€ had to grab it as knew it was best season. Ukrainian mob boss who is after dexter for his personal reasons brought quite a lot new life after weaker ssn6. Nice plot twists also as deb knew dexters dark secret...

Collateral - re++visit. Tom cruise is really cool as hitman who forces taxi driver (jamie fox) to take him to targets. It`s probably only cruise movie I really like and he does good job here, most of other his movies I have seen falls to wrong role/script but here nail is hit. One of Michael Manns finest hours...

Game of thrones season 6(premiere). 1,5 years since watched season 5 so was time to take this off from plastic. Bit slow tempo perhaps as big war is coming but had it`s moments. Was nice to see one very bad and sadistic guy ends up to dog food.

Re-watched Upgrade last night. Loved it even more than the first time I watched it. A really fun slice of sci-fi. I'm not in love with the ending but the rest of the film more than makes up for it.

Critters quadrilogy and the new Binge.

Definitely an underrated franchise, I feel nostalgic of practical effects, that really had a charm. Ironically, most of the cgis done not a few (months?) years ago are already outdated and ugly, but the 80's movies like Critters and Gremlins still rocks! All hail handcrafted effects!

Thanks to shudder for having the balls to make a critters sequel.

The Golden Job - Boy oh boy. This is a fun-yet-nothing-special film let down by its awful reliance on unnecessary CGI. Blood, fire, debris, explosions and even car chases are entirely CGI enhanced and it really is off putting. In fact, it’s a pain in the bloody arse.

Otherwise, the film is fine. Average. Definitely worth a watch but it might be one you toss in the “watched” pile and never revisit again. When the action rolls around, it’s well put together. Nice camera angles, clear editing etc. Although, every car chase (even when it’s suped up sports cars) feels like it’s moving at 25 mph. 

Some nice shootouts and a fantastic fight cameo by Yasuaki Kurata are sprinkled throughout make way for, weirdly, an absolutely blistering final 20 minutes. Honestly, it’s like two different films. No hand to hand stuff but the action feels like Schwarzenegger’s Commando. In a very good way.

As for plot; it’s all very paint-by-numbers. Brotherhood ruined by betrayal. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

So, it’s an enjoyable watch for the most part. It is marred massively by its flaws but the action manages to keep the film’s head above water. It’s mediocrity, albeit rather fun mediocrity.

Black gloved killer murders women and leaves half moon medallion to crime scenes......One of the best giallo movies considering script, as couple starts to investigate reason of deaths viewer naturally gets a grip to storyline too. Too often in these flicks watcher is in completely darkness why violence happens and then in last minutes when killers identity is revealed police arrives and tells motive for murders was money or sth...

Back and forth revisiting Shaws and eurohorror...

Templar knights who were after immortality on dark ages are back...Very good spanish horror, and have to admire how expert lights crew were on those days. In every nighttime scene was easy to see what`s going on. You can`t say same about many movies made today.

Blind dead series have 4 movies so still lot to re-watch on that area...
