Guest Markgway
Ha-Ha. I thought it was an alright film - apart from the ending. Zatoichi was a Japanese-Taiwanese co-production.
Member mpm74 Posted June 7, 2010 Member Share Posted June 7, 2010 Do you know what Shaw films Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho worked on before starting GH ? What were their titles? Isn't it funny how Bruce Lee's arrival was perfect timing? He lived long enough to spark the company off. Did some of those early, non-Bruce Lee GH films really make any money? If so, were they considered successful? What made Lo Wei make the transition from Shaw to GH? Same reason? More money, artistic freedom? Guest Markgway
Do you know what Shaw films Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho worked on before starting GH ? What were their titles? There's no record I know of for productions they worked on. They were executives rather than hands on producers. Very much behind the scenes staff and thus uncredited. Isn't it funny how Bruce Lee's arrival was perfect timing? He lived long enough to spark the company off. Did some of those early, non-Bruce Lee GH films really make any money? If so, were they considered successful? Yes, they had successes without Bruce Lee, but he was their BIG star. What made Lo Wei make the transition from Shaw to GH? Same reason? More money, artistic freedom? I would imagine so. Shaws were very controlling and tight-fisted. Chow no doubt offered them sweet deals. Member mpm74 Posted June 9, 2010 Member Share Posted June 9, 2010 Thanks =D Do know who the first males and females stars were the first to sign onto Golden Harvest? Pre-Bruce Lee - who were Golden Harvest' biggest male/female stars? Do you know year/or what film first introduced the "new" Golden Harvest logo - the one everyone knows?? Guest Markgway
Do know who the first males and females stars were the first to sign onto Golden Harvest? I would imagine anyone who made a movie for them in 1971 would be among the first. Some would be be contract players, some hired on a casual basis. Pre-Bruce Lee - who were Golden Harvest' biggest male/female stars? Well, Bruce was there almost at the beginning so there wasn't much time "before" bruce. Angela Mao, Nora Miao, Pai Ying, Tang Ching, James Tien, Patrick Tse, Maria Yi were among the earliest stars. Do you know year/or what film first introduced the "new" Golden Harvest logo - the one everyone knows?? Funnily enough, I wondered that myself the other day. I don't know the answer, but The Private Eyes was one of the first.

Member Buxbaum Posted November 6, 2010 Member Share Posted November 6, 2010 Wasn't Shaw brothers against the Zatoichi flick? And then Jimmy Wang Yu pretended to be on holidays so the judge in Japan decided it wasn't illegal to show the movie? And due to this he got fired from the Shaw Brothers? Member BORNINHK Posted October 26, 2013 Member Share Posted October 26, 2013 There is a good book with many old school pictures about GH called GOLDEN HARVEST: LEADING CHANGE IN CHANGING TIMES. Published this year by Hong Kong Film Archive. The book is mostly in Chinese, but there is a free added CD-ROM in English. I've got it yes. Seems like an interesting book. http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/CE/CulturalService/HKFA/en/4-1-51.php Where did you get your copy? How much of it is in english and how much of it is in Chinese? Does it have a full filmography?
Member BORNINHK Posted October 31, 2013 Member Share Posted October 31, 2013 Someone from Hong Kong bought it for me and took it over to Holland. I don't think that the book is for sale here in Europe. Maybe you can order it, but it would be quite expensive I guess. There is a full filmography in the back pages. Just like in the book about SB: THE SHAW SCREEN. The book itself is almost entirely in Chinese, except the lines concerning the pictures. The added free CD-ROM is entirely in English. Member mpm74 Posted October 31, 2013 Member Share Posted October 31, 2013 Thanks for the info. Sorry one more question, but what exactly is on the CD-Rom? Anything good? I would love a full history on Golden Harvest.
Member NoKUNGFUforYU Posted October 31, 2013 Member Share Posted October 31, 2013 After watching some of the golden harvest movies from the 70's, one of the things that seems to crop up, a la Big Boss, is the slow burn set up. Several of the films all have heroes who basically wait until the last 1 or 2 fights to show their stuff- especially the Himalayan and Manchu Boxer, but there are others. I get that it helps with the drama, and the fights int he Himalayan are really good, but there is a feeling of "get on with it already". I think Tan Tao Liang waits until the last 45 minutes before he throws a spin kick. Anyway, I could be wrong.
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted October 31, 2013 Member Share Posted October 31, 2013 Outside of the Bruce Lee flicks and a couple of others, I think GH movies were pretty quick to get to the action, just like everyone else.
Member NoKUNGFUforYU Posted October 31, 2013 Member Share Posted October 31, 2013 Probably just the sequence that I watched a few movies. I mean, the tournament and hapkido get right to it, so you have a point. I will say that Chan Sing kicked ass in the Himalayan, and so did Angela and Tan, I was just waiting for him to open up. He is an old favorite. Quick little story- I was doing Wu Shu in Berkeley when I saw one of the girls perform one of the best side kicks I have ever seen. I asked her who she trained with and she said, "Master Tam in Monterey Park". That master Tam? Had I known when I went to UCLA that I could have trained a summer with Northern Leg, it would have been a dream come true. Instead I trained with some a-hole dime a dozen racist korean, Master Bong. Oh well.
Member BORNINHK Posted November 2, 2013 Member Share Posted November 2, 2013 I've just found out that the book can be ordered via www.shopthrupost.hk Just type the words "Golden Harvest" in the search engine of that website. The added CD-ROM does contain much history about GH in general. There is also specific information.
Member teako170 Posted November 2, 2013 Member Share Posted November 2, 2013 The price isn't bad (US $18) but then the postage "almost" doubles it. Still not bad but really wish it (book) were in English. Thanks for the link BORNINHK.
