Bollywood is suppose to be pretty huge, but I never hear about any movies from there. Does anybody know of any good Indian movies? Especially any martial arts/action films that they produce. Horror could be good too, if they even do horror.

Action wise, I personally enjoyed these:

MAIN KHILADI TU ANARI (1994) - Bollywood version of THE HARD WAY with Saif Ali Khan in the Michael J. Fox role, an actor who wants to become an action star and follows around tough as nails cop Akshay Kumar, who is looking for the men who killed his brother. This film introduced me to Akshay Kumar, who is quite a martial artist.

DHOOM (2004) - a cross between LETHAL WEAPON and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS. Two mismatched partners must take on a band of motorcycle riding bank thieves. Stars Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, and John Abraham.

ASAMBHAV (2004) - an Indian Special Forces agent is sent as an undercover to Switzerland to rescue the President from an Al-Qaeda like band of terrorists. Stars Arjun Rampal, Naseeruddin Shah, and Priyanka Chopra.

KRRISH (2006) - Tony Ching Siu-Tung was action choreographer on this sequel to an ET like film called KOI...MIL GAYA. Hrithik Roshan plays the son of the original film's hero who because of his father's experience with an alien is born with super powers and becomes a masked superhero.

DHOOM 2 (2006) - Even better sequel to the 2004 film brings back Abhishek and Uday, but add both Hrithik Roshan as a very sly thief known as "A" and Abhisek's wife Aishwarya Rai as a mole sent to infiltrate "A" and become his partner. The stunts in this sequel are awesome thanks to action consultant and stunt legend Vic Armstrong.

For comedy, I recommend 3 IDIOTS (2009). This was a very funny movie that doesn't feel like it runs 3 hours, but it does. Hollywood is planning a remake as is Stephen Chow, who is developing a Chinese-language remake.

I've only seen one Bollywood horror film, JAANI DUSHMAN: EK ANOKHI KAHANI (2002). I didn't like it too much. It was about a woman who after being molested tries to commit suicide. The problem is her past life lover, a snake-man, returns from the dead and goes after the molesters one by one and kills them. Akshay Kumar was in it, but he doesn't really get a chance to showcase his martial arts skills. But the movie as a whole wasn't great IMO.

my gf has indian roots and so it happens that i get to check out the occassional bollywood caper (even tho i hardly ever want to).

from what i understand, bollywood is either love or hate.

hate it is for me. between the H and the B, i watch any dumbass hollywood action/thriller/drama/comedy before sittin thru a bollywood flick thats on a comparable scale to its u.s. counterpart.

they do have some competent ppl working in the business, but their involvement in most cases is hardly enough to make s/t i`d actually call 'good'.

krrish, dhoom1+2, jaani dushman.... at the end of the day, especially set against the international competition, are pretty much ALL CRAP.

last thing ive watched was main aurr mrs khanna, with salman khan (one of BWs big kahunas), preity zinta & kareena kapoor (of the recent 'bodyguard' fame, also with salmon khan), and u guessed it, i thought that one sucked too (i went out midway thru).

theres maybe a handful of thriller-dramas (incidentally, all without singing or dancing) i did actually kinda like. cant give any recommendations tho, u`d have to throw titles at me in order for me to remember.

some artsy brainy indie stuff u get to see at smaller festivals has potential. nothing that could entertain me tho.

go rent a bunch that sound cool to u in the online reviews or wait for s/o more versed and appreciative to comment here and find out for yourself, if the BW experience is for u. or just leave em the hell alone

The amount or martial arts films they do are few and far between. The latest I saw was Lahore http://photos.onepakistan.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1464 which is a remake of The Best Of The Best

Action films are many I like Awarapan http://www.movieposterdb.com/movie/1020937/Awarapan.html

Dabangg http://www.glamsham.com/download/poster/dabangg-posters/1356/1.htm

Ghajini http://www.movieposterdb.com/movie/1166100/Ghajini.html

Gangaajal http://movie-posters.lucywho.com/gangaajal-movie-posters-t626847.html

Of the horror films these are my favourites in recent times

Raaz http://msmui2.blogspot.com/2010/11/seram.html ( not Raaz-The Mystery Continues )

Bhoot http://www.ranker.com/pics/N578561/1

Haunted http://poster-photo.blogspot.com/2011/05/haunted-3d-hindi-movie-mahakshay.html

Raat a bit older is also good.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. I will definitely check these films out. I am a huge fan of any foreign movies and India is one country I haven't checked out yet. I can't wait to get started!

By the way, I assume most of these will be kind of hard to find right? Are these going to be downloads or will I be able to find DVDs with English subs?

Since I like the music and dancing in the Bollywood films, as well as the action, I enjoyed DHOOM, DHOOM 2, KRRISH, and GHAJINI, as well as SHOLAY (1975, a classic action film). LAGAAN: ONCE UPON A TIME IN INDIA (2001) is very long, but has a satisfying ending. Partly, it's a sports movie since it deals with a game of cricket between a poor village and some snotty British officers.

The following may not have been rated so high on IMDb, but I thought they were fun. I can't recommend them, because they're more like guilty pleasures. VEER (2010) is a big action movie with sweeping battle scenes. CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA (2009) is pretty much a silly comedy, but it's got Gordon Liu and some martial arts. They're fantasy, not horror, but I also enjoyed MR. INDIA (1987) in which a hero with an invisible cloak opposes a megalomaniac trying to take over India; ONCE UPON A WARRIOR (2011), a Telugu (non-Bollywood) fantasy film from Disney, with a blind sword-wielding hero against an evil sorceress; ALADIN (2009) with good vs. evil magic forces. ALADIN co-stars Amitabh Bachchan, who became a big star in SHOLAY, and was the big star who signed the autograph in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

Every title above is listed on Amazon.

I've got CHADNI CHOWK TO CHINA. Meh. I mean, some of the comedy translates pretty well. The dance numbers are a trip. And the female lead is smoking. But I found the action to be pretty lame, especially the end fight.

Be sure to check out the original SHOLAY. Just knowing this film will get you far in cross cultural conversations! Whenever I have an Indian cab driver, it blows their mind that I, a white dude, have seen and like SHOLAY! It was the original "Curry Western".

Also check out the original DON that also stars Amitab Bachchan.

For recent films that have a good martial arts twist to them, can't go wrong with CHADNI CHOWK TO CHINA. A group of us went to see this when it was released in mainstream cinemas in Toronto for a friend's birthday. And none of us are Indian. We had a blast. Fighting, comedy, dancing, hot leads and Gordon Liu! Something for everyone!

The best resource for Indian films is the forum BollyWHAT?: For Clueless Fans of Bollywood Films! (there are discussions of non-Bollywood Indian films in the Beyond Bollywood section). It's a very different forum from KFC but well worth investigating.

On Twitch, J Hurtado often posts Indian film news/reviews from his perspective

Online shops for Indian films have dwindled in the last few years, but some still available are:

http://bhavanidvd.com/

http://khanstore.hostedbyamazon.com/

http://www.induna.com/

One can also find a number of Indian films with subtitles on YouTube, but IMO the action/dancing isn't nearly as smooth when watching on YT versus a DVD/BR.

There's no way around it -- the action in Indian films can be very entertaining to watch, but it is more like 70's exploitation than Hong Kong Kung Fu/Heroic Bloodshed.

Going by my personal tastes, the most entertaining Indian films in recent years have been South Indian, specifically from the Telugu and Tamil film industries, not Bollywood (Hindi language).

Some recommendations (entertaining films, not "Quality Cinema"):

Nayak - The Real Hero

Yamadonga

Magadheera

Arya 2 (no need to see Arya first)

Bujjigadu

Sivaji

Mysamma IPS

Villu

Style (2006)

Sri Anjaneyam

Simha

Jalsa

Varsham

Pokiri

Kaakha Kaakha

If you're looking for less action, more mainstream or highbrow films, then try:

Mr. & Mrs. Iyer

Autograph

Godavari

Hey Ram

Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana

Dumm Dumm Dumm

Kannathil Muthamittal

Dil Se

Saathiya

Dosar

Asoka

Dil Chahta Hai

Mixed Doubles

Rang De Basanti

Omkara

Lage Raho Munna Bhai

Kandukondain Kandukondain

Nagina

If you want to check out some Bollywood horror than the Mondo Macabro collections are pretty great. The Ramsay Brothers are kind of like the Shaws in a way-a family operation with a house style, familiar stable of actors, tight budgets but insanely entertaining and well made despite low budgets etc.

Yeah The Ramsay Brothers ruled in their day; frankly there was hardly much competition in this genre.Ramsays were the Kings of Bollywood horror but sadly by today's standards the Ramsay movies are badly dated.

Scary horror is not a genre where India excels. It's as if horror is more culturally specific than comedy.

Agreed.I like Bhool Bhulaiya it is psychological and intelligent with humour thrown it. Very well made.

Kwok Choi, it seems you've seen a lot of Bollywood films. Have you tried any Telugu or Tamil movies? They can be a lot closer to HK movies in spirit, if not in execution.

HI Xianzai yeah you are right even more than martial art films to such an extent that I can understand 80% of Hindi based on watching the movies.

Sadly just a hand full of Tamil movies where released in my neck of the woods. The guys who imported Indian movies were mainly from the north so the majority of the product was from the Bombay now Mumbai film industry.I've seen some Tamil films but just about 1% of the Hindi equivalent which I've been abreast with from the late 60s and have tried to keep up to date from the early 70's till present.I've seen Indian movies from earlier days but my main interest is from the 60s onwards.

The Tamil Movie I want to see very badly though not that recent is this http://dazzlingpics.blogspot.com/2009/09/tamil-movie-peranmai-gallery-wallpapers.html

If only I could understand 80% of the Mandarin dialogue in films...

Looks like it's available direct from Ayngaran: Blu-ray, DVD (might want to email them first before placing an order to make sure it's still in print and the BR is not region B)

I forgot to mention this earlier, but there's also an Indian film rental service: http://www.njmtv.com/index.html Works differently than Netflix, so be sure to read the terms & conditions. Could be a cheap way to see some of the Indian films recommended above.

 I started learning some Mandarin and Cantonese phrases through the movies but sadly that ended when the HK film industry decided to make English dubs whereas the Indians kept the original language and only dubbed 2 or 3 Hindi films. The Tamil dialect is difficult so that would have been a challenge.

Subs help a lot if you have a good ear.I once asked someone in Amsterdam why everyone seems to understand English and was told that Hollywood movies and movies from other English speaking countries help because they are all subtitled not dubbed.

Thanks for the tip I was hoping those Tamil guys (they might be affiliated with Ayngaran) who books cinemas to show Tamil films in the UK will do some sort of repertory screening or a late show or even perhaps the BFI could do a season of Tamil films as they have done before but failing that I'll have to get the Ayngaran Blu-ray and view it on a 2k digital cinema projection system as the last resort.

Indian BRs/DVDs tend to go out of print almost as quickly as HK/SK ones; if I wanted to see the film, I'd grab the BR ASAP if it's still available.

It seems from your message you may be based in the UK. Ayngaran has stores in London: http://www.ayngaran.com/templates/xmassale.html
