Does anyone remember the true story of 25-year old named Tomohiro Kato, who drove a truck into the weekend crowds of Akihabara and then went on a stabbing spree, killing three people and wounding others? It was major news in Japan and all over the world.

Well, CrunchyRoll has announced that a film version is in the works. Ryuichi Hiroki, an independent cult film director, is helming the project for a March 2012 release date.

Kato was sentenced to death on March 24, 2011 by the Tokyo District Court.

From what is understood, there will be no big name in Japan playing Kato.

While they're at it, they should make a movie about that Greyhound bus Chinese guy who beheaded (and started to eat) that teenager....

Crazy stuff.

Oh, this is River? For a moment I was wondering how many Akiba films is Hiroki doing...

It's screening at Tokyo Filmex next month.

[introduction]

A young girl walks alone in Akihabara. Ever since her boyfriend died in a crime that occured in this city, the real world has lost all meaning for her. Before long, she meets a young man living in an underground passage.... A film that delicately depicts the rebirth of the heartbroken heroine. The superbly framed scenic photography is also magnificent.

Sounds very promising. Hiroki used to be one of my favorite directors until he got boring... but now he's got several interesting new films out / coming soon. Got Keibetsu BD on pre-order...
