Member HKFanatic Posted September 25, 2011 Member Share Posted September 25, 2011 I just watched "Dragon Family" the other night and thought it had a spectacular 'heroic bloodshed'-style ending, with one of the earliest instances of 'gun fu' I can think of. Everybody knows and loves movies like "A Better Tomorrow" and "Hard Boiled" but I've been trying to find some lesser known heroic bloodshed films to watch. Can you guys recommend any? One I've always wanted to see is "My Heart is that Eternal Rose" but I've never been able to track down a copy. Basically, any Hong Kong movie that has a great ending involving gunplay...I'm all ears. But I've seen the most well-known ones. I'm looking for the obscure, dusty gems.
Member mark187 Posted September 25, 2011 Member Share Posted September 25, 2011 I would highly recommend My Heart is That Eternal Rose, it's an excellent film. fivestarlaser has it in stock, here's the link. http://www.fivestarlaser.com/movies/16766.html Others I would recommend include As Tears Go By, A Hero Never Dies, Flaming Brothers, A Killer's Blues, and True Colours. There are dozens of other good ones out there, here's another thread from a few years back that should give you plenty of films to check out! http://kungfucinema.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2878&highlight=heroic+bloodshed

I've seen As Tears Go By and A Hero Never Dies, both great films, but will definitely look into the others. Flaming Brothers is now on Netflix streaming so I was planning to watch it soon. Also, does Casino Raiders w/ Andy Lau and Alan Tam have a shootout at the end?
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted September 25, 2011 Member Share Posted September 25, 2011 Casino Raiders features relatively little action, but is still a good film IMO. The ending is a gambling sequence. I assume you're already familiar with The Big Heat, The Last Blood, Just Heroes etc. The ending of Long Arm Of The Law 3 has some serious gunplay! As does Path Of Glory. Hong Kong Godfather (the '91 Andy Lau flick) has some good gunplay scenes. Also Crocodile Hunter with Andy Lau. And I'll second My Heart Is That Eternal Rose, great movie.

Yup, I just saw The Last Blood for the first time. That one had some great action. One of Wing Jing's better movies. I know that's not saying much but still. I've seen Long Arm of the Law but none of the sequels. I'll look into those and Hong Kong Godfather '91.
Member HKFanatic Posted September 25, 2011 Author Member Share Posted September 25, 2011 I also just watched Curry & Pepper with Jacky Cheung and Stephen Chow. Not a great movie, per se, but the action was choreographed by Blackie Ko (same guy who did The Last Blood) and it had some pretty cool action beats.

Member DiP Posted September 26, 2011 Member Share Posted September 26, 2011 Bullets Over Summer ain't a heroic crime movie. It doesn't feature all the traits nor the stylized action but plays out realistically. It's also considered as one of Wilson Yip's forefront pieces before the Donnie Yen collabos so it's not overlooked. Coolie Killer seriously doesn't get mentioned a whole lot. You won't find subduedly intense hitman movies made in 80s Hong Kong like this.
Member HKFanatic Posted September 26, 2011 Author Member Share Posted September 26, 2011 The ending of Long Arm Of The Law 3 has some serious gunplay! I managed to snag a disc of Long Arm of the Law 3 from Netflix even though most of these HK movies are listed as "Short Wait" (which I imagine is basically code for 'out of a print and we don't have them anymore').
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted September 27, 2011 Member Share Posted September 27, 2011 Like DiP said, Coolie Killer is a really cool film! Not abundant with gunplay, but a really nice job on the action by Tony Leung Siu Hung. Blades, broken glass, hooks, guns and hand to hand, assassins on rollerskates. One of the most overlooked HK films ever. Hero Of Tomorrow, albeit a triad film, has some heroic bloodshed vibe to it. And for a newer take, try A War Named Desire... kickass gunplay finale!
Member Chris Posted September 27, 2011 Member Share Posted September 27, 2011 Would 'Jumping Ash' be an appropriate recommendation? I had a VHS copy but sold it, thinking it was quite valuable but only got 20 dollars for it on ebay. Should have kept it
Member HKFanatic Posted September 28, 2011 Author Member Share Posted September 28, 2011 Watched Long Arm of the Law 3 tonight. The action scenes were very kinetic and exciting to watch, I was pleased to find out it was the same choreographer as "Superfights" and "Bloodmoon.."
Member Cognoscente Posted May 6, 2021 Member Share Posted May 6, 2021 Return to a Better Tomorrow (1994) is a solid movie with cool action, brotherly bonding without being sappy, and a strong sense of tragedy despite the movie being cut down from its original Category III rating.
