Have you ever wondered what a guy would do if the grandmother that he lives with suddenly dies, then finds out that his sister has been kidnapped, and on top of all that learns that the kidnappers plan to make a pornographic movie with said sister, and post in on the internet by 10:00pm the next day?

Well, I'll be honest & say I haven't either, but either way the answer is coming in the form of this summers Korean action movie, 'The Beast', starring newcomer Jeong Seok-won...and it apparently seems to involve dishing out punishment in a manner mildly reminiscent of 'The Man From Nowhere'.

Ha ha, I was also in that super small minority of finding `The Man from Nowhere` to not quite reach the level of greatness that so many thought the movie was. I posted my thoughts in post 57 of the original thread - http://kungfucinema.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11183&page=6

It was a solid action movie, but the bad guys where simply too cardboard cut out in my opinion, especially when compared to the fairly well developed character of Won Bin. Then every time we see the bad guys it seems to be just to watch them do something evil....spike a drink, force the kids to pack drugs, beat someone up etc.

Still, these are minor complaints, if `The Beast` is on a par with it, I`ll be happy.

Movies got alot better once I decided to make up my own mind.

Before going to any forum or reading any review. I watched Man From Nowhere Online.

Then picked up the Blu Ray Region 1 the week it hit.

What helped me was just watching it as a movie - with no expectations - using my own mind, likes and dislikes, to reach my own conclusions.

One great film. Looking forward to The Beast for sure!

Q&A With Cast and Crew from last week at the premiere.

Check it out HERE

It's easy, if you want to know if a Korean action film is going to be good just check how it was received in Korea (check Korea Times reviews). The best example was "I Saw The Devil" vs "The Man From Nowhere"... I Saw the Devil was almost a flop in Korea while The Man from Nowhere was a huge success. WHY? It's because 90% of people who go to the cinema in Korea are young girls with their boyfriends, the same young girls are crazy about handsome actors like Won Bin (even though The Man From Nowhere's story was really nothing special). Btw, in Korean culture it is perceived really strange if 2 guys (friends) go see a movie together... it almost NEVER happens. So what I mean here is that Korean reviews are mostly made by the opinion of female and young couples, which is not a good thing if you want an honnest review of a horror movie or a strong action film which doesn't feature any handsome star.

Ha ha....so true, I was in Korea last week and asked my friend if he wanted to check out the new movie `Quick` together....he gave me a look like I`d grown a second head or something.

Good follow up to Man from Nowhere. Much more action as expected from Won Bin. Where his previous film held out till the big finale to show his skills.

And he is a Beast. He's got strong screen performance.

The Beast didn't stray away from Man from Nowhere's formula. Perhaps more action and less drama.

That's good to hear VenomsFan, but just to confirm Won Bin is not in 'The Beast', the actors name is Jung Suk-Won.

The Man From Nowhere was so overrated. As I said before, it enjoyed a huge success in Korea only because tons of girls went to see it. It was some kind of chicks flick where girls could go on a date and see a movie with a guy without the guy being too bored about a romantic film.

Anyway, I nearly felt asleep in the theater. But my eyes were glued to the screen when I watched "I Saw The Devil"

But I will definitely watch the Beast.

It's not brother. Not even close.

What an thoroughly mediocre film.

The lead (Seok-Won Jeong) had zero charisma, and the "love interest" had about as much sizzle as a sparkler at the bottom of a lake. The fights were boring and lacked impact, anything original or inspired, or even anything vaguely interesting. There was a complete lack of suspense, even though it's supposed to be a "race against time" plot. The whole production looked cheap, was filmed in a lackluster manner, and to top it off the score was lame. It appeared that the filmmaker's had everything they needed resource-wise to make a decent film, except... any talent.

A big waste of time. 3.5/10

Thanks for heads up KFB. I never did end up watching this one, pretty much because I anticipated it being exactly like you've described. Korea has a tendency to churn out a bunch of inferior copy-cat efforts when a certain movie has great success, and this had copy-cat written all over it after the success of 'The Man from Nowhere'. Another copy, 'Man of Vendetta', is similarly awful.
