Django Unchained (2012)

I thought I would start up an official thread on DJANGO UNCHAINED, the next project for Quentin Tarantino. This will be his homage to a good ol' favorite genre: The Spaghetti Western.

The film is pretty much about a former slave turned bounty hunter.

Officially signed to appear in co-starring roles are Franco Nero and Christoph Waltz. Will Smith has been in talks to play the titular Django.

Twitch has confirmed that Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to play the villain of the film, Calvin Candie.

Idris Elba (THOR) is also in talks to join the film, and may possibly be a contender for the lead role if Smith decides not to take on the role.

I was excited for this movie until I heard Tarantino is going to ruin it and make Will Smith Django. Now Will Smith is good in certain movies and shit, but I sure as hell ddon't want to see Will Smith play Django... that just sucks. I went from pumped to stumped...hope he can get it together and form something good cause I don't mind if Smith wants to be in it but don't want to see him as Django. Im tired of all this bastardization in movies these days. Hell they should just remake all the John Wayne movies using Sam L Jackson lol...

Django Unchained is simply the title. It's a play on all the Spaghetti Westerns that had Django in the title, but didn't have a character named Django in the movie.

I think Will Smith could surprise audiences in this. Like you, I think he's good in certain movies and sucks in others. When I saw The Pursuit of Happyness, it was real eye-opener that Smith could actually act. He needs to do more challenging roles instead of the mainstream blockbusters he normally does.

This is the kind of role that could get him more respect as an actor.

I'll be intersted in seeing it, I love a good Western, and QT movies aren't that bad! But Will Smith as a Western star hmmm hard to imagine!

I can't see Will Smith as a Western star...he did Wild Wild West (sci-fi mixed with Western) and I didn't care about that. Now, he has done some really good roles, so if he does sign, we'll see. But if he doesn't, apparently Idris Elba and Jamie Foxx would be contending for the role as well.

I will. Tarantino's made 7 films so far, 7 of which are utterly brilliant. The only American filmmaker whose films I'm looking forward to.

Well, I won't go so far as to say I think all of QT's films are utterly brilliant but I'm quite interested in seeing what he'll do with an Old West setting. Hope this won't be an excuse to get crazy with the N word again.

Well, it's a western/southern slave exploitation flick (ever see Mandingo?), so you can bet there'll be some asshole slave owners with the N word frequently on their tongues. At least it will have some historical context.

Personally, I absolutely ABHOR Will Smith, I find him to be smug and annoying and a pretty terrible actor to boot. I think Independence Day movie was the only film of his that I've seen where I didn't find him completely insufferable. I really, REALLY hope that he ends up passing on this and we get the great Idris Elba instead.

I'm torn because I love Tarantino and have really liked every one of his films (I also think Pulp Fiction was easily the best American film of the 90s)....but if he casts Will Smith in the lead of Django Unchained....I will have to boycott it.

After the wretched "I, Robot" in 2004 I made conscious decision to never watch another Will Smith movie, and other than catching about half of I am Legend (also terrible, but I'm a sucker for Richard Matheson's novella) on a plane I've managed to stick to that decision.

DiCaprio is an interesting choice, though, especially as the villain.

Is this officially confirmed or just Tarantino saying the next movie he's going to make is... And then never makes it?

I thought Leonardo Dicaprio was attached to this, no???

Still is, just hasn't officially been cast yet. As is Will Smith, Jaime Foxx, Idris Elba, Christoph Waltz.

Now that's better phew! I am so glad Quentin didn't pick Will Smith.

You and me BOTH brother.

Apparently Will Smith is heavily involved in producing a reboot of the musical Annie to star his daughter Willow and had no time for Django. BAHAHAHAHA.

Latest courtesy of Dark Horizons

Due to schedule conflicts, Kevin Costner has dropped out of the role of Ace Woody, the main henchman to lead villain Calvin Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. The role will now be played by Kurt Russell.

Woody is the man who trains the male slaves to fight in the ring and female slaves in the ways of prostitution.

Jamie Foxx plays Django. Christoph Waltz plays Django's ally, a German bounty hunter named King Schultz. Laura Cayouette plays Calvin's widowed sister and co-owner of the plantation where Django frees himself.

Casting update:

The RZA has joined the cast as Thaddeus, a violent slave toiling away at a Mississiippi plantation. Misty Upham will play Minnie, who owns a trading post/bar. Anthony LaPaglia will play the leader of a group of greedy Australians who encounter slave-turned-bounty hunter Django as they are escorting a group of slaves recently purchased as fighters. The roles are relatively small but are crucial in the film's final act. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a small role as LaPaglia's brother.

That looks like fun. Don't know that I'd hit a theater for it but I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I have never seen a Tarantino movie in the theatre. I didn't like Bastards. I like the Grindhouse and Kill Bill though. His 90's movies were his best IMO.

I agree I don't think I seen any of his movies in the theatre, and I know I won't be seeing this one in the movies either. Don't get me wrong I love most of his movies, but I think there way better on DVD!

I was hoping for something a little darker but I'll be in the cinema line when this gets a release. I'm excited for it, just not in a way I was originally.
