Tony Jaa is taking another very big step towards reclaiming his position as the top martial arts screen fighter in the world. And this one is more than a little bit surprising on a great number of levels.

We brought word earlier this month of a new Hong Kong based project that would match Jaa with fight choreographer Sammo Hung and now Thailand's Sahamongkol Film have announced that Jaa will reunite with director Prachya Pinkaew and fight choreographer Panna Rittikrai for Tom Yum Goong 2.

Missing elephant jokes aside, this is big news for Jaa with the original Tom Yum Goong - released as The Protector in North America - marking both his last true hit and the beginnings of his troubles. It was immediately after Tom Yum Goong that Jaa essentially declared Pinkaew unnecessary and unwanted, announcing that he would direct his next film himself. Pinkaew was deeply insulted and the relationship between the star and the director who built his career degraded to the point where they weren't even on speaking terms. Pinkaew would go on to groom Jija Yanin in Chocolate while Jaa would crumble badly under the pressure of directing Ong Bak 2 himself, eventually losing control of the badly over budget and over schedule project.

But Tom Yum Goong 2 will reunite the entire Tom Yum Goong / Ong Bak team with Jaa in the lead, Pinkaew directing, Rittikrai handling fight choreography and Chocolate star Jija Yanin also handed a significant role - the first time Jaa has ever shared the stage with another marquee fighter. Like the upcoming Chocolate 2, this film will be shot in digital 3D.

The big surprises in this are twofold. First, Jaa and Pinkaew have patched things up and are working together again. This can only be viewed as a good thing because, frankly, neither has been as good without the other. The bigger surprise, though, is that Jaa is once again in the Sahamongkol fold, which I would never, ever have expected to happen. Jaa's original ten year contract with the company will have expired before this film goes in to production, meaning that they have struck a new deal. Consider that at the peak of the Ong Bak 2 debacle Jaa took refuge in a police station claiming that the studio had sent gangsters after him and, well ... the prospect of the star willingly signing up with the studio again seemed unlikely to say the least. Whether there was any basis to the gangster story isn't even the point - if Jaa believed there was enough truth to it that he sought police protection that says something about how incredibly bad the situation between star and company had gotten and I'm amazed that they've gotten back together.

Pinkaew's Chocolate 2 is scheduled to go in to production in May and will need to be completed before this can begin, so don't expect Tom Yum Goong 2 any time soon. But fans should be happy to know it's coming.

Would of like a new film instead of a sequel but look forward to some more bone breaking!

I hope the 3D does not affect the fight choreography too much.

lol!

Well, i guess it's a way to attract people to watch the films. We can treat it like porn...the title never really matters.

Great News but change the DAMN title already! His movies are not sequels in anyway shape or form!

Well, most theaters that show a movie in 3D will also show it on another screen in regular D.

Well as troubled a production as Ong Bak 2 was I'd still say it was better than TYG, Pinkaew didn't have an excuse to produce such a poor edited movie.

I have mixed feeling about this, I'm glad to see him sticking it out in Thailand, but on the other hand Thai cinema doesn't seem to want to take that next step, I'd love nothing more than to see Jaa's next film be a classic.

I think the only two names that matter for a movie like this are Tony Jaa & Panna Rittikrai....frankly the director hardly even matters, which is just as well when it's Pinkaew at the helm, we're hardly going to be getting a classic in terms of story or acting with his name attached to the project.

However as long as the action delivers, at least for me all can be forgiven. I just don't want to see any sign of Kevin Bacon attempting a Jack Sparrow style English accent at any point during the movie.

Out of curiosity I wonder if this reconciliation will give the abandoned Jaa / Pinkaew project 'The Sword' any hope for being made, the movie which would feature the dual sword fighting technique of Daad. The script for this was finished and it was due to start shooting after 'Ong Bak 2', before they had a falling out with each other & it was cancelled.

Does anyone else here want to see Jaa headlining in a movie with Panna as director & choreographer? I think that would be awesome, Panna's 'Born to Fight' & 'Bangkok Knockout' are as close to pure action movies as you can get, I personally would love to see it.

I think most people are worried about the change 3D brings in how directors bring the action to the screen, which usually just results in lots of shots of actors flinging shit towards the camera....

I wanna see JiJa and Jaa elbow each other to the death!!!

I very well doubt that will happen, but I think it would be cool to see Jaa be the villain, he'd be like a HJL dare I say!

I'm excited about two things. First I got the news that Dan Chupong is also going to be in this TYG2 together with Jijaa Yanin and Tony Jaa. Second about rumors that Tony was looking to work overseas, and might star in a project by Hong Kong superstar Sammo Hung.

I`d say there`s a high probability that the answer to your question is `yes`.

Personally I think it`s great that Yanin & Jaa are going to be sharing screen time together, up until barely a month ago it was fairly debatable whether we`d ever be seeing Jaa back onscreen at all. So for him to not only make a comeback, but for it to be with the leading lady of Thai action cinema as well, can only be considered as exciting news.

I actually think this movie will also help Yanin improve even more in the action department, there hasn`t been any performer on the martial arts scene for a long time who can convey anger quite the way Jaa does. He never looks like he is just `performing` the choreography, rather you 100% believe he wants to beat the living daylights out of any opponent he`s up against.

Now that Yanin is paired with Jaa, hopefully the sometimes mentioned complaints that her kicks and punches look `soft` can be remedied.

Like OAB implies, I think most people are psyched for this.

I completely relate to your sentiment however.

I'm not against this pairing. Curious to see what happens with it. But like you, I'm kind of wary of anything detracting from Jaa's MA time on screen, even if it is Jija Yanin.

I was keyed up for Jaa pairing with Sammo Hung. (Maybe it'll happen.) This pairing (Jaa/Yanin) seems more likely as both stars are Thai and this will really boost the industry there.
