Member SadShawFan Posted April 1, 2011 Member Share Posted April 1, 2011 Last week Hoker Records Taiwan started a series of Shaw Brothers DVDs. The first six titles (and their original covers):
Member Sheng Posted April 1, 2011 Member Share Posted April 1, 2011 Strange choice of titles to open a new series... Being one who really appreciated Hoker's exclusive Union and First Film reissues, this time there is no reason to get excited. Guess its save to assume that these Shaws will only be ports of the old IVL discs - at best. Hoker certainly won't deliver any better transfers (the IVLs of MAGNIFICENT RUFFIANS and MASKED AVENGERS looked pretty fine anyhow). So they're about to do in Taiwan what Zoke does on the Mainland, that's all. Bring on the BDs, Hoker, and a lot of us would contemplate an upgrade! Member Blood Sword Posted April 1, 2011 Member Share Posted April 1, 2011 Nice artwork tho...but I wish some of those titles unavailable on dvd get release.
Member bigrogie Posted April 1, 2011 Member Share Posted April 1, 2011 Not really exciting. How many releases of the same movies do we need? If the unreleased ones would finally see the light of day, that would be exciting!
Member Winfred Posted April 1, 2011 Member Share Posted April 1, 2011 My friend in Taiwan emailed to say that the English & Chinese subs appear together and you cannot remove them. She also said the image was not 16:9.

Member vengeanceofhumanlanterns Posted April 5, 2011 Member Share Posted April 5, 2011 Magnificent Ruffians is a great choice. Hopefully they do a decent job. Now, if they're releasing Twin Blades Of Doom (a vcd only release by IVL), will you please release Black Butterfly (another vcd only release) ...pretty please! I'll definitely be pickin up TBOD and MR.
Member bigrogie Posted April 5, 2011 Member Share Posted April 5, 2011 Now, if they're releasing Twin Blades Of Doom (a vcd only release by IVL), will you please release Black Butterfly (another vcd only release) ...pretty please! Both these titles were released in Malaysia in DVD format, not VCD rip. I have both.
Member The Dragon Posted April 6, 2011 Member Share Posted April 6, 2011 Both these titles were released in Malaysia in DVD format, not VCD rip. I have both. Bigrogie, how is Twin Blades of Doom? The trailer makes it seem awesome. P.S. ... If it's worth getting, where did you pick it up?

Member vengeanceofhumanlanterns Posted May 9, 2011 Member Share Posted May 9, 2011 Both these titles were released in Malaysia in DVD format, not VCD rip. I have both. I've been trying to find Black Butterfky on DVD format since Winfred first let we members here know of its release. It's one of my favorite Shaw films. If anyone here has it and isn't that impressed with it, please let me know. I'd pay you for it or make a trade.
Member David Rees Posted May 13, 2011 Member Share Posted May 13, 2011 I have heard from a good source that a lot of the most popular Shaw titles will be released on Blu ray later this year and next in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Member Sheng Posted May 13, 2011 Member Share Posted May 13, 2011 TWIN BLADES OF DOOM was on VCD only in HK but I understand it did get a DVD release in Singapore/Malaysia. Heard that the PQ wasn't better than that of a shitty VCD though... I'm really tempted to order the Hoker release, did anybody have a chance to see this already?
