The White Butterfly Killer

Pretty impressed with this 1973 Taiwanese indie (some sources say its release date was in 1976 but I know of two Cinemart ads published in '73). Normally, its hit-or-miss with these low budget films but this one had some really nice "atmosphere." Lots of average swingy-arm fu but what made this flick good was the story itself (gasp).

Hsu Feng plays the cold-blooded hotel owner (White Butterfly Inn) who was raped several years earlier. When the thugs frequent her establishment, she methodically plots out her revenge by taking them out one at a time - even playing them against one another. The soundtrack is not your average stolen sound bites from a Hollywood pic either. Whoever composed it, did a good job helping to enhance the mood of the scenes.

Again the fu was average but overall it was a well rounded production in terms of enjoyment. HKCM seems to have the wrong "Wong Yu" listed in the cast though. Its not the comedic actor of Shaw Brother's fame who passed away in 2008 but instead this Wong Yue.

so there's an Ocean Shores dubbed tape, one in original language and what else? Has there been a widescreen release of this film anywhere?

Oddly, I popped this in the player I have set up for 4:3 but the images looked a bit squished. I proceeded then to put it in my BR player (set for 16:9) and it looked much better. It was still a full frame copy (rip of O/S vid so not a true w/s) however it certainly looked much nicer to the eye.

Have to check out further films with ice queen Hsu Feng. She really stole the show here.

many OS versions are squished and can be pulled but most are not perfect 16:9 but they look good enough as you say. you can't go wrong with the ice queen. her skills are not polly shan kwan level but her demeanor sells any film she is in. her hate is well suited for bashers!

Was checking her filmography on HKMDb. I do have a few she's in (A Touch of Zen, etc.) but need to rewatch:

To Kill with Intrigue and Face Behind the Mask.

How was Dragon Gate w/ Carter Wong and The Greatest Plot w/ Lo Lieh?

Got any recommendations?

The Fate of Lee Khan, The Great Hunter and Chase Step by Step are a few not mentioned that she really shines in. In the Wang Yu film, Great Hunter she also plays a cold-blooded hotel owner!

Raining in the Mountain might not be to everyone's taste because there is not a lot of fighting, but she is great in that too. I saw a couple of her later films directed by Pao Hsueh Li, The Revenger and Eight Escorts, but they were so bad that even she couldn't save them.

For A Touch of Zen, try to locate the French dvd for the best quality picture. I was amazed at how much better it looked then the Tai Seng.

The Fate of Lee Khan' date=' [/quote']

Yes, have this one. Will have to watch. Thanks.

I have Eight Escorts but don't recall anything about it.

Agreed. Had both copies and the TS copy is pale in comparison. I heard the German copy is good as well but haven't seen.

I'm a big Hsu Feng fan. My favorite is Raining In The Mountain. Is White Butterfly Killer available wide & subbed?

If there is a wide subbed print of this one it is not well known.

The director Hau Chang did Furious Monk from Shaolin aka Killer Priest (not the same film as Shaolin Monk although they both star Chan Sing). FMFS is another basher with solid action and standout storyline for this type of film.
