Looking for informed opinions on this late 80's flick with Anita Mui & Leslie Cheung.

Although I seemed to make a point of seeing just about everything that came out of HK back then, I never saw this one for some reason.

Saw it cheap at a store down the street and thought of getting it.

Whaddya think of this movie?

I agree with Mark;grab it.Beautiful performances by Anita Mui (especially) and Leslie Cheung.Very good poignant movie.Makes you think a lot after it ends and I cherish movies that give me this feeling.

This film is one of the first serious 80-90s New Wave HK films outside your typical commercial Golden Harvest fare to capture a global arthouse following. Haunting, nostalgic & melancholy; struck chords with the pre-97 HK emigrating class. Memorable images and performances by the leads (you even get a cameo from Shaw's Wong Yue).

No sh#t!!? Would I recognize him easily?

And thanks for all of your opinions guys.

I just picked this up & will probably watch it sometime this week.

Now that I think of it, I remember seeing Painted Faces at the Music Palace in the late 80's and Rouge was the 2nd feature.

I probably stayed for about 5 or 10 minutes and then left.

During the first hour of the film. Flashback sequences in the brothel entertaining the ladies, where elese? Gained a little weight but you'll know it when you see him.

Yeah, saw him right away.

Kinda weird when you think that Rouge wasn't made really all that long after SB closed shop. Just a few years.

Also spotted Liu Chia Yung I believe.

Great movie, btw. (taking nothing away from Painted Faces!)

Leslie Cheung was a bit of a prick though.

Very melancholy.

And made all the more sad as both of the principles are recently deceased.

Wow, didn't catch LCY though. I recall being distracted by Leslie's bad make-up as an old guy but otherwise an solid & significant HK film.
