Member Drunken Monk Posted February 19, 2018 Member Share Posted February 19, 2018 Saw this today. Truly a top tier Marvel movie. Fantastic performances, well developed characters, beautiful cinematography and some really solid action sequences. The film isn’t without flaws. There’s some bad CGI and some of the fights suffer from poor editing (to mask doubles?) but it doesn’t hinder the film at all. It really is an absolute joy from start to finish. And it doesn’t rely on pre-established Avengers antics. It’s very much a stand-alone. I highly recommend it. You won’t be disappointed.
Member AlbertV Posted February 19, 2018 Author Member Share Posted February 19, 2018 I saw it yesterday...it is truly a "cool down" before the impending Infinity War. Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan gave some excellent performances...well, pretty much everyone did. It is not just a superhero movie but a movie about a kingdom. The beats of village life reminded me a bit of some of my recent experience with Nollywood/Wakaliwood films, African films where despite their ridiculous action storylines, does at times depict village life as well. As @Drunken Monk pointed out, some editing was my only issue. Boseman trained under Marrese Crump for the film. The credit even comes in as "Martial Arts Trainer for Mr. Boseman - Marrese Crump". Which I thought was awesome. There is a nice post-credit scene which I won't spoil but it's great nonetheless.
Member Sheng Posted February 19, 2018 Member Share Posted February 19, 2018 Caught this last week on the big screen and was truly surprised how well thought-out, casted, scripted and directed it is. Yes, it comes with the trappings of the usual Marvel superhero silliness that I'm usually allergic against - the bloodless, cartoonish, kiddie-friendly fight scenes, a computer-game-ish spaceship chase, not to mention the Disneyfied goofyness of the rhino rodeo in the end - but the thoughtful africanisation of its entire universe, the underlying cultural and historical signifiers, the numerous references to the Black Holocaust and its aftermath, the philosophical, deeply humane concepts about sharing advanced technological knowledge for the benefit of mankind, all this made BLACK PANTHER a standalone movie experience. And they gave us a villain with Michael B. Jordan armed with a truly identifiable message that anyone who ever understood Fanon could at least partially sympathize with (basically to 'vibranium'-arm the dark-faced, ghetto-icarcerated wretched of the earth). Nothing less than a class-act from Coogler & crew! Not, as could be anticipated, a Marvel boy-toy in blackface, but a whole 'nother dimension. I'ma go watch it again in the next few days. Member ShaOW!linDude Posted March 4, 2018 Member Share Posted March 4, 2018 I found it to be another solid Marvel flick. The action is fairly good throughout with the exceptions of the fight scenes. They are a hot mess of quick cuts, jumbled close-ups, and sometimes blurred CGI. Look, I know a lot of special f/x were used as well as stunt doubles, but come on! I was hoping for something on par with Captain America: Winter Soldier & Civil War. I went over the credits, and I honestly don't recognize any of the stunt/fight coordinators' names. And if keeping the production with a majority Afrocentric crew was a must since it's the Black Panther movie, fine. Do none of these people know who Larnell Stovall is? Seriously, as good as the movie is, this kind of ruined it for me.
Moderator Karlos Posted March 4, 2018 Moderator Share Posted March 4, 2018 Loved this one. My new Fave Marvel film. Agree with SD, the action scenes are mostly a mess - apart from the casino scene, maybe, but even that seemed truncated (extended version on home release. perhaps?) Beautifully acted and written for the most part, and thought the "monarchies SUCK!" angle was very well done. too.
Member AlbertV Posted April 6, 2018 Author Member Share Posted April 6, 2018 Major News: If you haven't heard, Saudi Arabia is repealing a 35-year ban on cinemas in the country. The first Saudi cinema since the ban repeal will be open in two weeks and it will be an AMC theater. The first movie to be released in the country? Black Panther! Originally it was to have been The Emoji Movie, but the King of Wakanda will make his mark instead. http://www.darkhorizons.com/saudi-cinema-re-opens-with-black-panther/
