Dark Horizons reports:

Mark Bailey has been hired to pen a script based on Marvel Comics' "Black Panther" reports Heat Vision.

The Black Panther was the first modern African-American superhero. Created in 1966, he uses a heart-shaped herb that grants the person who consumes it enhanced strength, agility, and perception.

The project has a long development history, Wesley Snipes was attached at one point while Djimon Hounsou is voicing the character in an upcoming animated mini-series.

Bailey recently adapted Monte Reel‘s non-fiction book “The Last of the Tribe", a project that "The Bourne Identity" helmet Doug Liman was attached to last summer. No word on scheduling, though it'll likely be well after the release of "The Avengers” in 2012 and “Iron Man 3" in 2013.

I say hire Hounsou as the Black Panther and I will sure be in

Cool. Black Panther is actually a marvel superhero that I feel could make for a very good movie, unlike crappy heroes like Thor and such. Ofcourse it all depends on story, casting and directing, and obviously I hope it will be completely set in Africa...

... but if it's done right, it could be very very good.

Major update over the past year with the announcement that Chadwick Boseman will be playing the role in 2018 and he will first appear in Captain America: Civil War.

The major update is that Vanity Fair has gotten word that SELMA director Ana DuVernay will be directing the Black Panther movie.

I wonder who would make a good director for the film. Let's see...they do like bringing relatively unknown blood when needed (I didn't know who the Russo Brothers or Scott Derrickson was before their MCU roles; I knew James Gunn and was shocked when I heard he directed Guardians of the Galaxy but look how awesome that was (thats IMO).)

Who do you guys think can direct the King of Wakanda? This is going to be a very tough call.

Latest rumor I heard was they were also talking with F. Gary Gray. He could possibly be good IMO.

I have no idea who should direct as I am not current on directors. Good for Ava that she knew this would not be a good fit.

I am sure whomever they find will do a good job.

He directed the terrific The Negotiator, which if you haven't seen it is really worth a watch

I don't how chadwick boseman would make a better black panther than michael jai white.Say what you want but all that could be said is that he's younger than Michael and that's about it.You can't say that he's a better actor because Michael has more experience and is a decent actor in his own right. And let's not factor in physical capability because that is all in Mike's favor.

Yes, especially now that Kevin Feige will directly report to Bob Iger. Ana DuVernay had mentioned creative differences and my guess was it involved the "Marvel committee" that Ike Perlmutter (CEO of Marvel) set up and Feige got a bit fed up after Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. Now that Marvel Studios will direct to Disney's Iger, it will give directors a bit more creative freedom.

I could see F. Gary Gray or hell, Antoine Fuqua can tackle this film.

Fuqua would be an interesting choice for director (I still really like his take on King Arthur amongst others.). Too bad about the internal committee possibly being the reason for Ava reconsidering though.

As far as Feige, he nearly walking during Captain America Civil War (how ironic that would have been, Civil War in the movies and behind the scenes...)  I would love for Michael Jai White to get that kind of a huge boost being BP too, but I think he'd make a brilliant Blade.

While they are still looking for a director, Joe Robert Cole is in negotiations to do the screenplay. Rumor is that F. Gary Gray is one of the contenders to direct, but if he takes the Furious 8 job, it may be an issue.

Good news in terms of the release date: the date has moved up to February 16, 2018 as its original release date has been replaced by the newly announced sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp.

It is official...Creed director Ryan Coogler will be directing Black Panther. Here is the official statement from Marvel:

"We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family, The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct 'Black Panther.' Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we've found the perfect director to bring T'Challa's story to life."

Excellent choice in director. He really has a great eye for drama and, if the boxing scenes in "Creed" are anything to go by, it seems he might have some interesting takes on action set-pieces too.
I just hope he takes T'Challa back to Wakanda. I don't think we need to see another city smashed to pieces. Wakanda would be an amazing backdrop for the film. Bring back Andy Serkis as Klaw (this time with his sonic converter), add a new, more imposing imposing villain and we could really have a great film.

I'd love for Fox to give up the rights to Storm so we could see T'Challa and Ororo as husband and wife, but that's very unlikely as they are still planning more X-Men films.

Secret Executioner

While I can't speak for the rest of what DM said (though it makes me want to check out Creed seeing it seems the director did a good/great job on this one), Storm being one of the main characters in the X-Men series makes Fox letting go of her quite unlikely (though has she been used much past the first three films ? I remember a cameo in First Class, but I don't know if the next movies did or will use her much). An alternative could be to go the way they went with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, creating an alternate version that is not a mutant per se - hell, they could do that to introduce Hank McCoy AKA Beast in the rooster as well (seeing his history as a member of the Avengers and the following of the character, I guess it would make sense).

Storm hasn't had much of a role in recent films, but it seems like she'll be doing a lot more in "X-Men: Apocalypse". I agree with you though. An alternate version of Storm would be awesome. The Wakandan queen Storm needs to be seen.

From what I understand, the story will take place in Wakanda and it is believed that Andy Serkis is returning as Ulysses Klaue for the solo film. The script is currently being worked on. There was even a rumor that Ernie Hudson would possibly be playing T'Challa's father, but that wasn't confirmed.

New Japanese trailer for Black Panther from http://www.aintitcool.com/node/79108

"There's not a lot new here to be excited for from the previous trailers, but there are three new shots from a casino scene, shown so quickly in previous trailers it was difficult to tell where exactly Black Panther was.  There's new dialogue from Martin Freeman's Everett Ross (looking very alarmed at T'Challa's presence), some ensuing fight chaos, and Ross firing his gun on the run."  And the Japanese language narrative sounds cool.
