Member Michael L. Posted November 15, 2010 Member Share Posted November 15, 2010 I'd go back to the '60s for Japanese avant gard cinema, such as Tokyo Drifter.
Member masterofoneinchpunch Posted November 15, 2010 Member Share Posted November 15, 2010 My favorites are from the 60s and before (good pick from Michael in Tokyo Drifter) unfortunately. While I find films from Japan that I like from the past 15 years (especially from Yôji Yamada like The Twilight Samurai), my knowledge is better in the older cinema. If you are interested in some of those picks I can post them here. My favorites 1995-2010 (one per director): Moon Over Tao (1997) Keita Amamiya (OK I may be the only fan of this ) Ringu (1998) Hideo Nakata My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) Isao Takahata Audition (1999) Takashi Miike Versus (2000) Ryuhei Kitamura Spirited Away (2001) Hayao Miyazaki, The Twilight Samurai (2002) Yôji Yamada Ju-on (2002) Takashi Shimizu The Cat Returns (2002) Hiroyuki Morita The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi (2003) Takeshi Kitano There is a lot I still want to watch from the newer period.
