Directed by Terrence Malick, who brought us The Thin Red Line. In tone and visual spectacle it shares much with TTRL. Dialogue is very sparse as the English arrive in North America to start a new life. They contact the native Indians and so the story begins.

The narrative is NOT based on convention. The film speaks through quiet, naturally lighted, visuals. Colin Farrell portrays a reluctant soldier who wants peace and happiness, and finds a taste of it amongst the natives - as did Caviezel's character in Red Line. But, although voice overs are used, they are not as revealing or probing and does not dwell in the philosophy or differences in the seemingly simple, but happy lives of the natives, and that of the new arrivals from England.

Ultimately a very subtle, rewarding film for the patient. Do not go into it expecting drama, action or a typical genre epic.

I feel almost reluctant mentioning this, but Andy Cheng did choreograph the action. There is one minor battle. Do not expect an action epic! I understand Terrence is busy with a 3-hour cut of the film...
