Master Daddy (insane cast!)

Wesley Snipes these days seems to generate more headlines for his money and legal issues than for his movies. But he’s aiming to change all that by keeping on working, with Variety reporting that he’s signed on to star in Master Daddy.

It sounds vaguely S&M, but is actually a multi-racial martial arts comedy that Snipes describes as the mutant offspring of Kung Fu Hustle and Meet the Parents. And while there are no real plot details to be found yet (though you can imagine your own from that combo), it appears to have rounded up a killer cast including Chuck Norris, Sonny Chiba, Sammo Hung, Tony Jaa (didn’t he retire?), Ron Van Cleff, Anderson Silva, Lee Mosely and Dan Inosanto.

So while the cast makes us think the producers are looking to create their own, martial arts-flavoured version of The Expendables (which Sylvester Stallone originally planned as a comedy before realising he needed to focus on the action), there’s also news that the likes of Rock Steady and Quest Crew will perform.

Despite there being no word of a director attached, the film is scheduled to start shooting shortly for a planned 2011 release, at least in Latin America where the production company has a distribution deal set up.

Will we ever see it? Frankly, we can’t help harbouring suspicions that this is all actually a plan to help Snipes with any lingering legal difficulties. After all, if you were facing prison, wouldn’t you want Chuck Norris, Sonny Chiba and the rest on your side to help with a break out?

This can't possibly be true...can it? The cast sounds wonderful but the premise ("Kung Fu Hustle" x "Meet the Parents?") doesn't fill me with joy.

I like Snipes as an action guy but this synopsis seems a little unreal if not surreal. I mean, what the odds of him lining up Norris, Chiba, Hung, and Jaa? The others I could see him pulling off. Is he trying to sell this before actually having the people attached to it? Are these oral agreements or has pen been put to paper?

Considering the film has no director, it's probably a case of Snipes or whoever trying to big it up so fans will be attracted to his big come back.

This is truly a case in which...I will believe it when I see it.

Considering there is one thing that doesn't make sense with this cast: Sonny Chiba has retired from action roles. He is still acting, but after suffering an asthma attack on a TV series, he has hung up the name of Shinchi Chiba and has resumed acting under his real name Sadao Maeda in Japan and "J.J. Sonny Chiba" elsewhere.

As for Tony Jaa...he is on temporary retirement, working on becoming a Buddhist monk.

So should this news be true, Chiba would have to be given a non-action role.

I have heard about this project for a while now, but not this cast list, which is crazy.

Here is a article from Variety which appears to be the source of the other articles

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118026414?refCatId=4076

"The film will feature cameos and performances from dozens of martial arts and fighting arts stars including Chuck Norris, Chiba, Frazier, Gracie, Hung, Inosanto, Jaa, Rhee, Kim, Lee Mosely, Bob Wall, Rampage, Anderson Silva and Ron Van Cleff. Musicians Rock Steady, Jabbawakkies and Quest Crew will also perform."
