Member stephenmiller Posted September 20, 2010 Member Share Posted September 20, 2010 Are there many of the old WWII era samurai films out there on DVD? I remember some seeing some footage of them in the Frank Capra documentary Know Your Enemy Japan (1945) and was intrigued by them. I already have the two Sanshiro Sugata films by Kurosawa, Musashi Miyamoto and the 47 Ronin by Mizoguchi. Any other unknown treasures out there? Member BlackLamaFaction Posted September 25, 2010 Member Share Posted September 25, 2010 It seems pretty hard to find films from that era in languages other than Japanese. Here are a few I know are available in English at least. Humanity and Paper Balloons (37) Sadao Yamanaka Tange Sazen Pot worth 1,000,000 Ryo (35) Sadao Yamanaka The Famous Sword (45) Kenji Mizoguchi A few silent era samurai films: Jobless Samurai (28) Serpent (25) Backward Flow (24) Samurai Town Story (29)
Member skubber Posted September 26, 2010 Member Share Posted September 26, 2010 The problem is that during the time after WW2 when the US forces occupied Japan many samurai or more generally chambara (swordfighting) films were destroyed by some stupid piece of shit called Mc Arthur because they were said to glorify feudalism . Others were destroyed by earthquakes. Here is a site where you can buy some of these very old samurai films that have luckily survived (it's not cheap though): http://www.digital-meme.com/en/our_products/dvds/index.html
