Member Sandpalm79 Posted August 19, 2010 Member Share Posted August 19, 2010 I have a newfound urge to possibly attempt to get every Chang Cheh movie. I have focused mainly on the Venoms but would like to possibly try to get his complete filmography. Are they all available through celestial? and does anyone on this board have anywhere close to all of them? Also what does his body of work seem like when you have over 50 of his films? would like to get an insight into what the overall view is like after seeing the majority? Also found this cool lil site and looks like it has a pretty complete list of his films.. http://www.beijingvideo.com/bjv/d2.html

Member bratty Posted August 19, 2010 Member Share Posted August 19, 2010 most of those were released on DVD by IVL, yes
Member teako170 Posted August 20, 2010 Member Share Posted August 20, 2010 Have over 80 CC films. There are indeed some not released by Celestial as they're not part of the Shaw library (like his later films) and some early works like Tiger Boy. Overall, CC made some great films mixed with some average ones as well as some clunkers. Still my favorite though. If you want a fairly complete list try HKCM or HKMDB. My files are on another computer, otherwise I would post all his films, including the aliases, in chronological order.
Member Fang Shih-yu Posted August 20, 2010 Member Share Posted August 20, 2010 Yes, the majority of Chang Cheh's Shaw movies have been released by Celestial through IVL on DVD and VCD. Some of the IVLs are "out-of-print", but there are US counterparts for a selection of titles that are currently still available (like Heaven and Hell, put out by Image); otherwise, expect getting all the IVL versions to take a lot of money (and time)! The Bloody Escape is an early work from director Sun Chung; Cheh was brought in to offer some guidance on the film. (It shows in the usage of "zoom shots"!) I've only over three dozen of these (so far), spanning from The Magnificent Trio to Five Element Ninjas!
Member Chemical Lemon Posted August 20, 2010 Member Share Posted August 20, 2010 Below are the 80 movies Chang Cheh directed at SB. Some of these were co-directed, and a few he may have just thrown his name on the project to help the director get the go ahead. But these are the 80 he was credited with at SB. All were released by Celestial/IVL except Tiger Boy. In the list you linked to the following movies were made outside of SB after (or around) the time Chang Cheh left SB. Some of these have been released on gray market dvds, none that I know of have good quality dvds. Death Ring Shanghai 13 9 Demons Across the River Dancing Warrior Great Shanghai 1937 Slaughter in Xian Mad Boy (this may be an alternate title, I'm not sure what this one is) As Fang Shih-yu said, "The Bloody Escape" was Sun Chung, and isn't in my list. I believe the rest of the movies in that list that are missing from mine are alternate names (I think I've consistently used the HK names in my list, but it's been awhile since I made the list, and I may have used alternate titles in some cases). There are a couple other movies he directed after leaving SB like "Attack of the Joyful Goddess" and "Hidden Hero", I'm not sure on all of them. I also read somewhere that CC directed a movie in Taiwan before coming to SB, not sure if this still exists (or if it's true). Member Chemical Lemon Posted August 20, 2010 Member Share Posted August 20, 2010 Also, the year column in that list are the years that celestial gave to the movies. In many cases the date of HK release is different, and the logic to what year they assigned to movies is not clear. They are often off by a year or 2, but not always. So the order of the list isn't necessarily the order the movies were shot or released.

Member Chemical Lemon Posted August 20, 2010 Member Share Posted August 20, 2010 Hey fiol, I didn't know S.13 had a HK dvd. Do you know if this uses the same source as the Ocean Shores version? full screen - pan and scan? Thanks for the info, I'm not a huge fan of his post-sb stuff, but S.13 is definitely my favorite of the bunch. Would love to see this widescreen. My chance mostly refers to the shops in NYC Chinatown, but I was under the impression the out-of-print IVLs are more difficult to locate and are more expensive. I am not a fan of mail ordering, but Yesasia looks like it'll do in a pinch, so thanks. Still a big factor is my constant broke-ness, but my chances are better now.
