Looks like a blast. Go Ohara is great at blending Anime/Manga style and live action where others have not been able to effectively. Geisha vs Ninjas was pretty crazy too. This film looks like he had a better budget to work with as well. I would love to see this.

I would recommend to lower your expectations. The film starts out really well, but that's pretty much it. The opening is everything the rest of the film isn't - good action, Nishimura gore, style, and above all semi-serious. These kind of films are so over the top that you don't need to underline it - people will get the joke.

Unfortunately Ohara doesn't think people will get the joke. Opening aside, every action scene is essentially played for laughs.

Rina Akiyama's goth loli dress is nice, but the actress is completely forgettable and the dress isn't given much fetish treatment. It's a cool dress but she could just as well be wearing school seifuku, or police uniform. A film called "Goth loli shokeinin" out to deal with the topic a bit more.

And then there's Misaki Momose. She's so great live. But in the film she just a comedy character whose main joke goes on for 5 minutes. And those CGI flames coming from her pistols... a real turn off.

ok, it's not a terrible film, just not a good one. You go in with high expectations and notice you're lowering them scene by scene until the finale arrives - which is a CGI showdown with almost no physical fighting in it. The end credits are nice, though.

Stick to Nishimura stuff (Tokyo Gore, Muntant Girls, Vampire Girl) instead. Goth Loli is closer to Noboru Iguchi, although not quite the same.

Is that because you made it to the end of the film and it's finally over?

No, the design was really cool, haha. I'm serious

The Japanese dvd is coming out in December. Without subs of course. And sadly, without re-edit. You could actually make this film better if you cut out most of the comedy.

Bonus features are supposed to include a spin off documentary, Now, spin off movies have been found on all recent Nishimura / Iguchi dvds, but a spin off documentary??? what the hell is that???

Speaking of Asian-inflected Lolita, here is an article about The Lover courtesy of Cinemart (#268, May '92).

Tony Leung Ka-Fai gave a very good performance despite being under the pressure of having to act for Jimmy Wang Yu in Island of Fire.
