Guest Stuntman Jules
Who else digs this guy's movies? Admittedly, he's inconsistent, some of his films are just terrible, but when DePalma is good, he's a force to be reckoned with. My faves are CARRIE, BLOW OUT, DRESSED TO KILL, BODY DOUBLE and PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, with SCARFACE close behind. I actually, like Tarantino, much prefer DePalma at his best to Hitchcock. Guest Markgway
I love both directors. Hitchcock had a whole different level of censorship to deal with that DePalma didn't. To avoid an 'X' DePalma would have to cut a woman being slashed across the face with an open razor whereas Hitchcock had to cut a shot showing a woman with her bra-strap undone. I just think you have to remember these things when making comparisons.

Guest fabhui
Thought I'd put this here as Hitchcock was mentioned. HMV is putting a pretty decent boxset out at a bargain price this month, I've already pre-ordered mine! Here's the link: Hitchcock Boxset Bargain! Guest Markgway
Great price, but what's the betting those are just reissues of the previous discs, including some crappy full frame transfers? Universal UK suck ass. I'm waiting for the R1 Psycho 2-disc set that's supposed to be out in September. I hope they do the same for Rear Window and Vertigo. Guest Dion Brother
DePalma in the 70s and 80s was fascinating, probably the most interesting director around. But in the last decade, he has made two of the worst films I've paid to see: MISSION TO MARS and THE BLACK DAHLIA (based on a great book). Another one who needs to retire, along with John Carpenter and Dario Argento.
Guest Soda drink
scarface dressed to kill blow out carrie carlito's way But I have to say, his best does not compare to hitchcock's best.

Guest sevenhooks
People sleep on FEMME FATALE, but man o' man! I personally think it's one of his best. Seriously. There is very little dialogue in it. Has a feel similar in a lot of ways to Dressed To Kill. He definitely went back to his Hitchcockian roots with this. Bare bones, vintage DePalma. Love it or hate it. Most will hate it. I love it. Rewards with every new viewing. Great Sakamoto soundtrack too! My favorite DePalma's... FEMME FATALE SISTERS (people sleep on this one too - check the Criterion disc) SCARFACE CARLITO'S WAY DRESSED TO KILL CARRIE UNTOUCHABLES (would have been MUCH better if not for Costner) CASUALTIES OF WAR
Guest Dion Brother
THE FURY really impressed me as a kid. It was action, horror, conspiracy movie and teen drama rolled into one. A real genre bender that nearly defied classification.

Member Cognoscente Posted May 2, 2021 Member Share Posted May 2, 2021 I wonder if Blow Out was inspired by the previous year's Read Lips. De Palma is no stranger to HK movies. The helicopter ambush scene in The Godfather III owes a debt to Long Arm of the Law. He must have seen God of Gamblers, because there is a similar escalator shootout in Carlito’s Way. Furthermore, the sweat-stopping moment in Mission: Impossible was clearly influenced by the one in John Woo's Money Crazy.
