I am going to order some SB IVL releases tomorrow (probably around 6-10)

I'd like for the ones who know what is great and must haves to give me their opinions and lists. You can list your favorite 2 or 3, or even 8 if you want. I want to get the ones that are only available as IVL releases. No reason for me to pay the extra money and extra problems of region 3 if it is also avaiable in the US. Also, it is ok to list a movie if it is only available as the uncut version as the IVL release. I'd rather get that one if it happens to be the only uncut version of a movie.

Off the top of my head, for classics that aren't yet on R1, I might suggest:

Boxer From Shantung

Five Shaolin Masters

Shaolin Mantis

Soul of the Sword

Avenging Eagle

The Bastard

Many ways to look at this!... For starters, there are the IVL versions of some titles that are currently available as Region 1 releases here; for example, when you consider Dragon Dynasty's up-coming Return of the One-armed Swordsman will NOT have "extras" on it, you can just as well get the IVL version for about $5 off, depending where you're ordering, a lot SOONER! This includes titles put out by Image [here] that will automatically have better pictures on the IVL versions! (Image's transfers are lamentable, but watchable!) It's safe to say you want martial arts titles, and maybe even try some of the "exploitation" ones, which have their fair share of action?... Chang Cheh's "Shaolin" films are worth your investment in; if you've got Heroes Two [via Media Blasters], then Men From the Monastery, Shaolin Avengers and Shaolin Temple(1976) will complete your collection of movies featuring Fu Sheng as "Fang Shih-yu"! From Lau Kar Leung, get Executioners From Shaolin, in which Chen Kuan Tai reprises his HT and MFtM role as Hung Tsi Kuan!... As for "exploitation" ones, any movie that has Chen Ping in it is worth a look. (Her Shaw debut, The Kiss of Death is a good starting point, readily available by the Image DVD, the IVL "out-of-print".) Chen is a very good actress, and she looks great in the nude; no "body doubles" for her! Overall, wherever you order, try and find out if what you want is in stock before you order, especially if you're inclined to want a batch of titles fairly quick! Happy hunting!:yociexpress01:

Actually, with a number of them, the IVL's are preferred because Image attempts to correct it (with horrible results). Both are shit none-the-less :).

Thanks for the answers guys. I

I will go over these movies tonight when I get home and order them some time tomorrow. I am off, so you can make suggetions and what not till mid day tomorrow, maybe even later. I will go with whatever you guys say are good, rare or what should be gotten.

I got a bonus check at work, so that is why I'm getting these movies tomorrow ha :)

Here is the list of what I ordered a couple of weeks ago. I have no idea if they are good or not.. but I should have them in the mail any day now.

The Convict Killer (Hong Kong Version)

The Trail of The Broken Blade

The Pirate (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)

The Kung-fu Instructor (Hong Kong Version)

Killer Clans

I have no idea how the Pirate is, but it seemed cool on name alone lol

I have these in my cart now, any that I should take out??? Im gonna shop around and go through what you guys list for prices etc and try and get the most for my money.

Clans Of Intrigue DVD Region 3

The Assassin (DVD) (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region 3

Five Superfighters (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region 3

Just Another Pandora's Box (Blu-ray) (US )

Just a note for you guys, I became a huge Ti Lung fan, and I haven't watched enough SB movies yet to know who else I really enjoy, but I did just watch the killer and really liked it. That was yesterday I watched it, may have to eventually get all of chows movies.

And you can suggest any movies as well, I LOVEDD The Heroic Ones, Delightful Forest.. any movies like this that are out and aren't SB.. it is fine by me for you guys to list them :)

I think I'll also order the Blade.. worth it too?

And your right about the order problem brother, I still haven't got Opium and the Kung-Fu Master [blu-ray]

from deepdiscount :(

If only Criterion handled the Image Shaws, instead of Image itself, there'd be no need to hunt down the original IVL versions of the Image DVDs! One look at any Kurosawa film from Criterion proves my point!... @Jackie Fhan.... The Pirate should be good as it's a Chang Cheh film (co-directed with Pao Hsueh-li and Wu Ma) starring Ti Lung and David Chiang; in fact, the gorgeous Yu Feng:kiss: (from The Delightful Forest) is in it, too! Good choice, that!

I'm a big Criterion fan (and a mod at one Criterion site), but I have emailed them many, many times to increase their HK/Mainland/Taiwan library. They have told me recently that they have no current plans for any HK/Mainland films. They hinted that another Edward Yang is probably in the works.

So far what 4 HK films for Criterion and 1 Taiwanese film. Not a great record :D.

And yeah the remastered Criterions look awesome for Kurosawa (not always perfect check the differences between the first release of High and Low versus the latest, same goes with Seven Samurai).

Ok, Im going to add these to the bigger list and put an x beside the ones I have picked so far, it is hard to choose when you want them all. If anyone can help me narrow it down, be my guest lol

Looks like some of these are mentioned more than once so I'll go with those and narrow it down to about 8 or so. I need to find out how much my pay check actually is, may not find out till I wake tomorrow.

No problem man, I'll help..

Just give me some of your favorite aspects, like actors, or story types...that could narrow the selection down initially for you!

IE weapons, comedy/action, fantasy, revenge (99% are anyway lol) and so forth

Ok let me see.

So far I have enjoyed

36 Chambers of Shaolin

My Young Auntie

The Herioc Ones

The Delightful Forest

Come Drink with Me

I believe I have liked these the most out of the ones I have seen. I have only seen about 20 or so though, so that may be a bad gage. I do own another 20 or so that I haven't watched yet, but been a little busy with other things to sit down to them, but I am off for 8 days next week.

I like adventure, decent storys are also good to me, I enjoyed the 5 Deadly venoms a lot, but a movie such as The Disciples of Shaolin I didn't enjoy as much even though I did like it a lot. I felt the 13 generals and how they handled them self in the fights, I guess just the way they were set up story wised seemed so cool to me. I am talking about the Heroic ones

I'd also say, a movie like Challenge of the Masters was fantastic, but I still enjoyed the ones I mentioed earlier slightly more.

Here is my movies though, and ratings I gave.. to give you an insight to what I have, I haven't rated all the ones I have watched yet, I want to watch them again before I rate

http://darth-germany.dvdaf.com/owned/asia/shaw-brothers

I have a few of the movies x'd out so far, since they were mentioned more than once.

Also, already had these in my cart, but should I remove any of them and save for later? I think I only added them cause of Ti Lung, I can't say I have any idea if they are worth anything..

Clans Of Intrigue DVD Region 3

The Assassin (DVD) (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region 3 (not sure why I added this one, other than good user reviews)

Five Superfighters (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region 3 (same as above)

You gave me a pretty big window of choices.. and obviously everyone has there own opinion..

So here's a top ten suggestion list for you (based on the info you provided)

also a side note, when starting to build your shaw collection, you can't go wrong with Chang Cheh Directing.. So that's why these films are CC heavy

Boxer from Shantung... Kuan Tai Chen at his finist! A story of Rags to riches and Betrayal

New Shaolin Boxers.. Alexander Fu Sheng. This movie has a great story arc, covering everything from comedy to tragedy, great all around movie.

Blood Brothers.. Ti lung, David Chiang, Kuan Tai Chen... Another betrayal movie,(hoes before bros ...) lol story is told from a different perspective..

Flip a coin on the next two

Killer Army

and or

Shaolin Rescuers

both are classic Venoms movies and are worth owning!! on a side note Shaolin Rescuers was acquired by funimation, so there US release should come out around the holidays or early next year.

Avenging Eagle...Ti Lung, and Alex Fu Sheng, story is of 2 strangers teaming up against the same foe. Great end fight, and a little Romance.

Another Flip a coin, both movies have a similar story

Clan of the White Lotus..Gordan Liu.. He actually plays a non monk role for a change and doesn't disappoint, I liked it because of the determination Liu shows!

and or

Executioners from Shaolin...Kuan Tai Chen (again) A son must avenge his father against the evil Pai Mai "white eyebrows" villian, Great Action!

Killer Constable... A robbery takes place, and the mission is to recover the gold, very violent and a crazy ending.. Not your typical shaw movie, but a must see!

Dirty Ho... starring Gordon Liu (with a stache lol) is a action and comedy.. it has great training sequences and cool story.

And as far as the movies you mentioned in your cart (clans of intrigue, The assassin, Five Superfighters)

all 3 are good movies, and very different stories just depends on what your looking for...

COI, is more of a mystery of killings investigated, which leads to a great final battle

5SF, is more action packed, with a bada$$ going around and challenging different masters "correcting there kung fu"

TA, is more of a story/drama that takes while to get into, about a swordsman who defends his schools honor..fantastic story!

Hopefully I've helped you out a little bit, this is just a small taste of 100's of great titles that need US localization!!

Take it easy, and Enjoy:khi5g:

Yes that is a help, I just feel like I want to get them all. I chose the ones already in my cart in random.. seems the ones I have in my cart I'll like a lot too... ha.

I will look over that list carefully and see what I need to save for later. Seems I did some decent choices on my own and picking from what you guys picked out overall, sounds like a lot of Ti Lung which is always good in my book, I don't like that he got older in his movies ha.. yeah I know that is a bit silly. Just loved how he was in the Delightful Forest..

I'm not so sure what to pick out now, its like every other movie your throwing out Gordon, I guess I could wait out on those two you talked about and their domestic releases.. guess that would be alright.

Thanks for all your help, and if anyone wants to continue making suggestions that is great, I'll just add them to the overall list and add them to my save later area and buy them over the next few months. I'll probably end up getting 4 to 6 a month anyway.. a few more this month :)

I hear you man, but you gotta make small steps.. The IVL's aren't going anywhere so 6 movies a month is more then enough!

lol @ the Ti Lung statement, when I saw him in Legend of the Drunken Master, and A better tomorrow I also laugh...you can tell he's not practicing martial arts anymore..he's filled out

But he's still a hellova actor, and if you like the "dynasty warriors" video games you gotta check out the movie Three Kingdoms.. He does a great job as Guan Yu

Yeah, I didn't realize that was him in DM till I looked up what movies he was in. I saw DM long ago maybe 6 or 7 years ago? And I just saw him and knew who he was in the SB movies about 2 months ago or less. So I was like hold on... he was the guy in DM? Then I was a little surprised and thought of how cool that was. I was looking at TK, I had not gotten it yet, It is in my saved list.. I didn't know he was in that. I might move that up in the next batch

A better tomorrow? Not so sure I have this either.. Will have to keep that in mind too.

Don't get me wrong, three kingdoms was decent.. But by no means great, check out Red Cliff if you want a true representation of the Chinese History along with a good movie...

A Better Tomorrow, is just one of a few great movies Chow Yun Fat an John Woo did together along with (killer, hard boiled, better tomorrow 2)... It's Gun-Fu though, very little to no martial arts are in there films.. Mostly thousands of gun fights lol

but Ti stars in better tomorrow, going with Woo from there shaw bros days together :nerd:

A Better Tomorrow is one of my favorite movies of all time, right up there with The Longest Nite as one of my absolute favorite HK non martial arts movies. Ti Lung is very very good in it, but Chow Yun Fat steals the show.

Good luck on the labor!
