Member 18JadeArafats Posted December 1, 2010 Member Share Posted December 1, 2010 I'm in the minority, but I liked Spiritual boxer 2; better than the first one, better than Cat v Rat; better than a lot of other kung fu movies in that it seems a well-made film, rather than a series of kung fu setpieces strung together haphazardly. No "you lie! taste my fist!" here. Things I like about it: Chinese corpse herder culture, complete w/ truck, I mean corpse stops; Wang Yu and Lau Kar Wing doing zombie/corpse style kung fu; Lau Kar Fei doing eagle style (rare!); lastly, comedy hits more often than not. I completely agree. My only complaint (and it's a minor one) was that I would have liked to see a little more of Lau Kar Wing's character. I couldn't get enough of old drunk "Magic Fist". Member Michael L. Posted December 2, 2010 Member Share Posted December 2, 2010 MY YOUNG AUNTIE (1981): Overated action / comedy which has dated badly but saved by a blistering finale which i can watch again and again. 7 / 10 Overrated? Try incredibly influential. I think there is a direct line between this movie and later comedies such as Royal Tramp. Also, if you look at other movies, not just kung fu movies, of the period then this movie really stands up fairly well.

Good point, i just think the comedy is far to broad and spoils it for me, i gave it 7 / 10 so i still think its a great film especially the action. Member Michael L. Posted December 3, 2010 Member Share Posted December 3, 2010 It is slapstick... it's supposed to be broad! Just out of curiosity, what language did you watch it in? I find that people who watch it in English (whether they are reading subs or it is a dub) end not to like it as much.
Member David Rees Posted December 3, 2010 Author Member Share Posted December 3, 2010 I watch 99% of the films in original language with subs, i find English dubs laughable most of the time but thats just me. It may be broad comedy but i just dont like it.
Member Alexandra Posted March 24, 2011 Member Share Posted March 24, 2011 Lau Kar Leung made great comedies. His "timing" for crazy funny actions, and the camera plays, complex dialogs with gags, thinking in the eighties fashion, is awesome. Member Iron Boat Posted March 28, 2011 Member Share Posted March 28, 2011 I think all of LKL's movies are hit or miss, none are perfect except 8 Diagram Pole Fighter. 36 Chambers is the most influential but it clearly runs out of steam at the end, the fights werent better than the training sequences and thats not right! Also, why do people keep saying Shaolin Mantis is David Chaing's best performance? I think he is much more impressive and natural in the Loot and in his Cheng Cheh films. But My Young Auntie is my favorite LKL comedy because everybody is goofy and silly not just Hsaio Hu whose overacting ruins most LKL films for me. I do wish LKL would not have cast himself in so many films though, I respect his contribution to martial arts cinema and action choreography but as an actor and onscreen fighter I just dont like him. Maybe as a villian, like in One Armed Swordsman, but not as a hero, he simply does not light up the screen; thats what Ti Lung, DC, CKT, Chi Kuan Chun, Fu Sheng, and Gordon Liu are for! Even in the later film Drunken Monkey he still insists on being the central character............why?! You are the Director so Direct! In contrast, I like his brother LKW a lot, his performance as a villian in Iron Fists (Shaolin King Boxer) was superior to any LKL role in my opinion. So instead of casting himself I say cast your brothers instead, Gordon Liu & LKW, much better results if you ask me.......

But it is not the one that is in question. "Pops and crew" featured Gordon Liu Chia Hui, Lau Kar Wing, Lau Kar Leung, Hsiao Ho, Kara Hui Ying Hung, Yeung Jing Jing, and Fu Sheng, just to name a few. If you do run across it, please share it here.
Member bratty Posted May 22, 2011 Member Share Posted May 22, 2011 I just wanted to chime in and say I like Cat Vs Rat and I think it is an underrated movie. It's not groundbreaking on any level but 100% enjoyable , if a bit on the silly side.
Member vengeanceofhumanlanterns Posted May 24, 2011 Member Share Posted May 24, 2011 Nice Dave. Gives one the spectrum of Liu Chia Liang's triumphs and failures. Shaolin Mantis will always be my fave of his and I'd rate a 10/10 I agree with alot you'd said describing his films but thought the ratings were a little bit too liberal. Challemge Of The Masters is another 10/10 IMO.
Member Alexandra Posted June 10, 2011 Member Share Posted June 10, 2011 Lau Kar Leung is special, a multi talented one. His work must be divided and understood in context as the "martial artist choreographer, and stunt coordinator", the "actor" and the "director". Three faces of the same person. He was privileged because he learnt all the facettes of cinema since he was in front of the camera (as actor) and behind it (as stunt coordinator and director) We can talk about his personality as actor, that will be different from the Lau Kar Leung as director and stunt coordinator or choreographer. In fact, every work he did had his own seal, that is to say, his personal touch, as other personalities of the cinema, we can say that Lau Kar Leung got this seal. This is a list of his works (from Hong Kong Cinemagic) enlisted by year (not all are from SB studios) You can realize the incredible talent of this person, watching the length of his career. And at the end the few awards he received. And some thinkings about. In red, the movies I watched. Member popsjnr Posted November 27, 2011 Member Share Posted November 27, 2011 To Mars Harmony the footage your talking about has the whole Lau Gar Ban on stage using different weapons (Fu Sheng using Monks Spade-Santa using Dai Pa/Tiger Fork-Auntie using Gim/straight sword etc) to promote Legendary Weapons right? This was on youtube posted by TVBting-but the HK TV channel TVB removed it earlier this year-still the same old manky VHS print-although they left the footage of Siu Ho as Monkey King doing an Opera-esque battle with Auntie up there?? There was a 2nd tape going around in the late 80'-early-90s of another stage performance, with some of the Lau Gar Ban--Pops, Auntie, Santa, Mad Monkey etc--must have been for New Year 84 to promote Pole Fighters coz there was a lot of staff play going on, and a lion dance if my memory serves me correctly-its nowhere near as impressive as the other demo though. Also the footage of Pops, Santa and Lau Kar Wing doing Fu Hok is originally from the start of Ocean Shores video print of Fist and Guts-along with Yang Ching Ching doing a Gim form and Pops and Lau Kar Yung shaping out with Fung Ho Kuen (Mad Monkey fist).
